I do, and I like it a lot. Birmingham has a good thing going. We could move back to New Orleans, my wife and I have discussed it, but choose to stay here.

Yes, I have. While I think the surrounding mountains are very scenic the town itself isn't anything unique at all. I mean unless you enjoy only going to chain restaurants and bars. How many different types of festivals and music events does it host compared to NOLA? Where is the unique food options? etc

"Cookie cutter"?
If you mean clean, good public transportation, 4 minor league teams, 2 professional teams, low crime, great schools, great outdoor options, more breweries than I can keep track of, tons of music, NASCAR races and Hall of Fame, yearly PGA tournament, great golf, bowl game, NCAA tourney, close to skiing in Boone, beaches in Charleston
Then yes Charlotte is cookie cutter

Not to turn this into FDB, but you have Frank Stitt places (not a fan of Bottega), Hot and Hot, and then Ollie Irene. Chez fonfon wouldn't last elsewhere and Galley is alright, so I'll give you that if I must. Cafe Dupont, Ocean, and others are average and would not survive in other cities. Outside of decent Medditerranean, some meat and 3's, and BBQ, the Birmingham food scene is seriously lacking especially considering the money in the area.
Not to mention the really popular restaurants in Birmingham are places like Bonefish, La Paz, Costa's, Cocina Superior, Cheesecake Factory, Village Tavern, Brio...etc. This is where the people I described flock.

Avondale, Lakeview, 5 Points, etc, etc... It really has come a long way compared to how it was when we moved here just a few years ago.

I haven't seen anyone here trying to argue that point. At all.

I posted that by mistake. I do not care for Charlotte, but I see why some would. It just isn't for me.
I moved from New Orleans to Birmingham, although if it had not been for kids I am not certain that we would have moved at all. That said we could easily move back to New Orleans, buy a house in just about whatever neighborhood we want, send our kids to whatever school we want, and relocate our life there, but we choose not to. Birmingham is a good place for us and we like it.
To the OPs original question, with no kids, I would probably choose New Orleans.

The few times I have been there have led me to disagree with you. We are not lucky to have a Superior Grill.

Nobody said it was a mecca for dining, but rather that there are "tons of good restaurants." You compiled a fine little list of them right in your post. You did omit El Barrio which I would feel comfortable taking anyone from anywhere there knowing they would be impressed.
Yes, the suburbs of Birmingham are littered with chain restaurants, but so are the suburbs everywhere. Highway 31 in Hoover isn't that much different than Veterans Blvd when it comes to restaurant choices, but those are not the only choices in the city itself.

I actually had a similar choice not long ago. I chose NOLA.
For me, w/ no kids:
1. NOLA: Always a ton of interesting stuff happening, great food, beautiful architecture, mild winters. Roads suck, high crime, really hot/humid summers.
2. Charlotte: Nice downtown, lower crime, but I have not found a ton of interesting stuff in the neighborhoods. You do have NFL and NBA. Colder winters and milder summers than the other two. I like the proximity to beaches, mountains, Atlanta, and DC.
3. Birmingham: People sh*t on it, but it is actually all right. Decent food and bar scene. My last choice of the three, but that is more b/c I like them than dislike it.
If I had kids that would knock NOLA down a spot or two. It is a fun place for kids to grow up, but seems easier for them to find serious trouble (although I know they do that no matter where they are).

Married, no children, presumably youngish, plus your family is in S. LA? Nola, without a doubt. I don't even see the question here, particularly if you can leave after 3 yrs. if you want to start a family & "settle down" somewhere else.

How about suburbs? if so Birmingham Metro.

Choose the place with the best residency program (if a specialty like ortho or something). If internal medicine/peds/etc, pick where you want to live.
I live in Charlotte with a wife and two kids and love it. Give me a wife and no kids, and I'd probably pick NOLA. But if you are from La and did med school in NOLA, I would go out of state, just to experience a different system/environment. CMC is a much nicer place to work than charity/university, but you won't get the autonomy or near the exposure to pathology that you'd get in NOLA.
Not sure about UAB, but the aforementioned two cities >>Birmingham.

We're more than likely going to move closer to family after residency so it's a chance to live somewhere else for a few years.
UAB is the more prestigious program, from a medical side, but CMC will give her more than sufficient training to be a good pediatrician.. She'll probably want to subspecialize we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.
I've visited Charlotte and Bham, and I'll be happy in either... Leaning Charlotte though, just want to be closer to the mountains

Bham is not underrated, it is terrible. I lived in Hoover for 7 years. Nothing goes on outside of college football. Plus the traffic is terrible. Charlotte is a much nicer city than Bham.
