I'd pick Birmingham over New Orleans, that's for damn sure. Don't know enough about Charlotte.

I like Charlotte for its proximity to other things, but I actually think N.O. and Birmingham both have more of a "city feel."

Charlotte is sort of a big sprawling suburb.

N.O. and Birmingham each have cool older actual urban feeling neighborhoods.

Probably has to do with Charlotte's main growth coming in the last 30-40 years, where the other two grew up much earlier.

Charlotte is certainly the bigger modern city, but I really think it lacks what I consider an urban "feel."

Birmingham has actually gotten a lot nicer. It's still behind compared to Charlotte & New Orleans but it's getting better each year.

I haven't been to Birmingham in YEARS, but it was nice when I was there. Of course, I stayed in Mountain Brook and Vestavia when I was there.

Birmingham's downtown is sprawled out and mainly UAB. What I consider downtown is the CBD. Charlotte has quite a few skyscraper office buildings. Birmingham has 3. The CBD is not big city like at all IMO.

I lived in B'ham area for 6 years. Really enjoyed my time there. I miss it. If it wasn't for family we probably would still be there.

New Orleans vs Birmingham shouldn't even be a consideration. Charlotte would potentially be the choice if you were married with rugrats in tow, but married and no kids, New Orleans is frickin' paradise.

ETA: I have been to Birmingham and some of the older neighborhoods were much nicer than I expected, but New Orleans still wins hands down.

Charlotte and it isn't even close. Savannah would be in Charlotte's league.

Even better, Charleston.

Eh, Charlotte to me is a suburb masquerading as a major city. I like it, it's big enough and easy enough and nice enough, but as others have said, I find it kind of boring.

That said I'd definitely live there if need be, it just doesn't make sense in a category with southern culture meccas like Savannah and Charleston

If you are single or a DINKer, I would say NOLA, Bham, Char.

If you have kids, Bham, Char, NOLA.

From my travels there, Charlotte has no soul. It is Applebees, Chilis and strip malls. Bham has come a long way in that regard, but I still miss Memphis when it's time to go out and about. The people here are pretty stiff, also.

All three offer excellent opportunities nearby to enjoy the outdoors, if that's your thing (it's mine.) You will just need to get out of town to enjoy it.

is this a hypothetical situation?

I made comment yesterday why someone should not live in Laffy that wasn't even bad and it got deleted.
