Honestly, I think it's usually a day before invite, so I never give you a hard time. Need to plan one ahead of time.

Creole, go on craigslist or LAsportsman.com Both will have listings of used kayaks. Do as much research as you can online. Also if you know anyone that has one, ask them if you can test it out.
