Why do coaches recruit an "area" instead of their position?

So the people in the region get familiar with that same coach?

Yes, but just because they have recruiting territories, doesn't mean they are limited to those areas. It's an advantage towards organizing recruiting efforts as a whole and scouting potential players in those areas.

The regional recruiters have to open a prospects ears before the position coach can sell them. Having the same coach in one area builds the pipeline.

Because you want someone like Frank Wilson in New Orleans where he is known by all the coaches!

That is the key of getting on the players early where a coach recruits an area then once a relationship is established, try to start a relationship with the position coach. But it takes time.

Everyone nailed it but also think cost plays a part. Cheaper to send one coach into an area than multiple guys. You know we are cheap

Familiarity/relationships and budget/costs

Makes more sense to go to Karr then St Aug and talk to players or WM then Neville to talk to prospects and coaches.

This is compared to recruiting one's position and having to go watch a WR at John Ehret and then go see another WR at Byrd

No doubt.

Recruiting a position you might find yourself in 30 different states. No school has that kind of budget.

Logistical efficiency in most cases. In other words it get's them more bang for the recruiting bucks spent. Of course the staff has the leeway to bring a coach from another area in to help if they think it's the deal-maker.
