It's a bit early for April Fools jokes.

I'm certainly not for eliminating shifts, but I am happy he's "open" to ideas that could infuse more offense. This seems like a terrible place to start though. I'd try to get a more consistent strike zone and maybe even raise it a bit.

I don't think any baseball fan on the planet would stop watching baseball because they banned defensive shifts. And it would inject offense into the game. If you think about EVERYTHING from a commissioner or executive point of view, it makes more sense to me.

Football and basketball are adjusting their rules and innovating. Baseball isn't. Football and basketball are the two most popular sports in America and are only growing in popularity. I see a correlation.

No...no one would stop watching. But there are better ways to improve it. I also think the game will adjust itself and thus cause pause to any manager who thinks of shifting. I can't speak for a league wide adjustment, but for my team our slugger started laying (and threatening to do so) bunts down the 3rd base line. The shifts on him changed after he showed he could do it. I see no reason why that won't become more common.

To be clear, I think teams should still be able to put as many infielders on one side of 2nd base as they want. This would still make it rewarding for a player hitting against the shift to go the other way.

There are a lot of ways to change baseball. Maybe this is one of them, maybe it isn't. But I certainly don't see any problem with them at least considering it.

More then anything, i think MLB needs to realign the league so fans get to see every team. As a Cleveland fan, i cant stand watching the Tribe play the Minnesota and KC's of the world. Make every team go to the DH and divide the league up by market size (since MLB has no salary cap). 16 in the major market division and 14 in the small market division. Play EVERYBODY in MLB. I think fans getting the chance to see new opponents would be great for the game and create new rivalries.

MAJOR MARKET DIVISION:

EAST:

NY Yankees
NY Mets
Boston
Philadelphia
Washington
Atlanta
Miami
Detroit

WEST:

CHI Cubs
CHI White Sox
Texas
Houston
LA Angels
La Dodgers
St Louis
San Francisco

MINOR MARKET DIVISION:

EAST:

Cleveland
Pittsburgh
Cincinnati
Baltimore
Milwaukee
Tampa Bay
Toronto

WEST:

Denver
San Diego
Arizona
Kansas City
Minnesota
Oakland
Seattle

Easily...the most retarded thing ever to come from the mouth of a baseball commissioner.

Dumbest thing I've ever read. This is a game of strategy and he wants to take that away. Let's get rid of lefty specialists too. That's cheating.

As a Houston fan, I gives 0 fricks about most of the other teams within the division and I know the feeling is mutual. Seattle, Oakland, Los Angeles coupled with Dallas and Houston. Makes a shite ton of sense. Not to mention most divisional road games start at 9:30 central. Thanks a lot Bud. You frick. Anything to make an easier path for his Brewers.

agreed. I think it's a good thing he's "open" to making a change. Now this is a stupid one to start with, but it's better than sitting around waiting for the game to improve itself. I'm encouraged by it.

Shifts are a contributor, but not a big one. BIS estimated the number of runs saved via shifting in 2014 at 195 runs across the majors -- or 6.5 runs per team, on average, over the entire season.

The average team scored 659 runs in 2014. Ten years ago in 2004, the average team scored 779 runs. So those 6.5 runs explain just 5 percent of the decline in offense over the past 10 years.

2004 was still pretty much in the PED era, so yeah, I'm not surprised they scored a lot more runs back then.

That is bull. You should be able to align your 7 defensive guys (pitcher and catcher excluded) however you like! This is professional baseball.. Don't like it? Adjust and hit the other way

Then it isn't for you.

Baseball should be about strategy. That is what makes it so wonderful. You have to constantly make adjustments to what is thrown at you to try to produce a run. You both have the options to align your 7 defensive guys however you please.. Why should that change. Baseball is about tendencies. You align your guys where you think he will hit it.. Then it's on the batter to not hit it there.. Make them pay.

I hate the idea or more restrictions and rules.

This isn't football or basketball.. and that is what separates this sport from those with more rules.

I happen to like stats like ERA.. and enjoy the defensive aspect of baseball. Want more runs? Then let the players juice up and hit bombs.. but don't take the ideas behind defensive schemes in baseball from me. I like the chess match going on. I this it's BS to no allow you to align your defense according to a player's tendencies.. That defeats the entire principle behind baseball.

This is so silly.
