The difference in offense if we banned it wouldn't be enough for the casual fan to notice, fwiw.

Maybe, maybe not.

I guess we need some data to back it up.

I know Brian McCann would have hit 25 points higher last season.

Would you have a problem with eliminating guarding the lines and playing for the double play?

If so, why? If we eliminated them, the casual fan would see an increase in offense, no?

To me, there's a difference between moving 20 feet to your left or right, and moving 100 feet into the outfield.

Yes, contrary to what your teachers taught you growing up, there is such thing as a stupid opinion.

quote:

One that it seems the guys in charge of baseball might agree with?

Oh, you mean the guys that let the the winner of an exhibition game determine home field advantage in the World Series?

quote:

Keep infielders in the infield and outfielders in the outfield. That is my stipulation.

So infielders can no longer go beyond the dirt to catch a pop up or be a cutoff man, correct?

And that answer still contradicts your position of the casual fan hating shifts, wanting to add offense, etc.

crap where the 2nd baseman is 100 feet into the outfield needs to stop.

Why?

Eta: I don't have the energy to pick that reply apart from my phone.

Illegal defense in baseball? That ranks up there in top 5 of the dumbest shite I've ever read on MSB.

Ill put two outfielders in foul territory I'd ink now the guy is going to hit the ball foul twice before he puts it in play

. absurd shifts are probably costing hitters in stats and contract value and making pitching stats look better than they should be

So giving an advantage to the hitter is the solution?

Isn't that a balk?

It's illegal, at least.

Maybe I played too much softball and the rules weren't enforced.

You are correct on the rule, sir.

Your opinion, not so much.

Yes, you can only have one player in foul territory the catcher.

it depends on how much advantage you want the hitter to have... we've taken PEDs away from them

This is stupid..

It would drive me crazy that other teams would shift so much for Laroche...I was pissed that Laroche could not seem to poke the ball the other way not the opposing team.

That's fine. Like I said, I respect others' opinions on here. This is probably more so a preference rather than a belief, if that makes sense.

It's not like we're arguing who is the best player in the game based on stats, logic, and facts.

I just don't think it's something that would ruin the game. They're not losing any fans over this. Baseball is clearly trying to do all they can to get the sport more exciting.

Yeah, I was just wondering if it has actually ever had to be enforced.

I've read somewhere that the umpire can warn the player and then eject him.

If I want to play with 4 outfielders and no second baseman, then that's what I'll do.

Teams do that sometimes--in reverse. Bottom of the 9th, tie game, bases loaded, one out...they play with 5 infielders and 2 outfielders.

Exciting

It's all about the time. If the pitchers wouldn't take so much time between batters and the batters taking their time playing with their bats or gloves, the game would be shorter. Put a time limit as to how long tv can take commercial breaks and get the players out on the field.

Eliminate the 7th inning stretch. Thats a couple more minutes as well. I don't need to sing a stupid song.

metrics and scouts have subdued hitters. The game isn't going to be what it was in the 90s, obviously.

Everyone seems to forget that this game is based more on failure Than anything else.

Or the left handed power hitters will swallow their pride and drop down a bunt.

I agree. I am a huge Reds fan and Griffey and Dunn were two of the first hitters the shift was employed against. I used to get so mad because they wouldn't just drop down bunts. Yeah, they might hit only 20 homers, but they'd have batted .400, and it would have stopped that crap. Same goes currently for Jay Bruce.
