It's boring because you have pitchers taking 45 seconds in between pitches.

That's one thing on a long list that makes baseball boring to a lot of people.

i'll play devil's advocate... absurd shifts are probably costing hitters in stats and contract value and making pitching stats look better than they should be

but it is an element of team strategy in a game that doesn't run on it. baseball is still a game of individual players making plays regardless.

Baseball has a pitch timer, umpires just refuse to enforce it

If this rule change is put into place, no one will care within two years. It'll just be part of the game.

Baseball fans get too crazy over rule changes. The league is trying to be progressive and make the game more watchable for younger fans. Not the 60 year-olds who are going to watch regardless.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. There are no "positions" on a baseball field

and no second baseman

Did you mean no set positions?

I'm fine with playing 3 infielders on one side of the diamond. Keep the infielders in the infield. That's my only beef.

Up until, what, 10 years ago, none of these extreme shifts were happening. So it'll go back to how it was for 100 years before that.

It's not taking all of the strategy out of the game. You can still shift, just not with a 4th outfielder.

Sports change rules all the time as a result of what happens on the field/court. I really don't think this would be a big deal at all.

I also think the NL should adopt the DH, which would make the game way more exciting.

NL baseball is more exciting than AL baseball. The DH takes away a dimension of the game. AL managers manage a clubhouse and make a lineup card. That's about it.

NL baseball is not more exciting. After the Astros switched over, I have grown to love the DH. It's nice not having a borderline automatic out at the bottom of the order

No it doesn't. Sit down and be quiet.

Why is 3 infielders on one side ok but not a 4th outfielder?

I can't tell if you're trolling or not.

You should be able to put as many players on one side of the infield as you'd like, but this crap where the 2nd baseman is 100 feet into the outfield needs to stop.
You joking, right?

Also, and I'll admit i haven't read the article yet...but how is this going to be policed? Will they have some inbounds type lines, big circles where each infielder must start the play inside the circle?

let's let this sink in the next time we discuss if baseball or football is more complex and which uses more strategy

baseball is contemplating banning putting defensive players in slightly different positioning than a traditional alignment

let's let this sink in

Should be?

How's it any different than guarding the lines, middle infielders playing for the double play, and outfielders playing deep/shallow or shading pull/opposite field hitters?

All of those things make pitchers better than they "should be", and this one is literally no different. I know you're playing devil's advocate, but it just didn't make sense IMO.

Extreme shifts go back to the 1920s. St. Louis used a shift against Ted Williams in the '46 World Series.

People can blame the shift all they want for decreasing excitement in the game, but at the end of the day, it's a risk/reward defense.

All a guy has to do is hit it the other way and its a guaranteed hit.

You literally just need to bunt away from the shift and you can walk to first

So next we should be talking about banning managers from bringing in a pitcher to face only 1 single batter, right? Or bringing in a closer in the 9th? Because both of those things cost hitters stats and contract value and make pitchers stats better than they should be
