is there a preferred method or utility to properly setup the USB stick?

i just d/l the 8.1 iso from my MSDN account but haven't done anything with it yet.

haven't done this before and didnt want to waste time trying different tools if one is better than the rest.

I just did this recently with Windows 7, I would imagine the process is the same for 8.1 as all you're really doing is creating a bootable USB from an ISO file.

I first tried the windows utility, but I was having issues. I downloaded a tool called Rufus and it worked perfect.

I used Rufus too. It's supposed to be one of the faster programs to set up a bootable usb

I did it (8.0) from a portable external HD without any problems.

ETA:

Oh yeah, Rufus.

I did it recently. There's a tool from Microsoft to make a bootable image your current installation and make a bootable USB drive. You can then install the OS from the stick.

Thanks for the Rufus find. Now I can make a Windows 7 boot stick instead. My cousin and grandparents that need Windows 7 (still on vista ) will be happy

Vista is fine if they have done all the Windows Updates

Do it the manual way! Format the drive (with diskpart), make it bootable (with bootsect), copy the contents of the ISO to it.
