House Fire Blamed on BGE

quote:

Kenner Fire Chief John Hellmers said the fire started when heat radiated up from a Big Green Egg ceramic grill that had been placed underneath a combustible patio cover in the backyard.

Davis said her husband had been smoking meat Thursday evening when he stepped outside to check the temperature of the grill. "He smelled smoke that wasn't meat smoke," she said.

I hate it when a good man goes bad.

If your meat is smoking, you are doing it wrong.

Would love to see his post fire set up. The only things that could have caused this is if the overhang was not high enough or he placed his grill too close to a vinyl sided structure.

Either way, stupidity was on parade at that address.

That's a nice little neighborhood. Clearly they need a safety lesson from Fire Marshal Bill.

Have my BGE under a covered patio. Zero issues.

And this is why I keep my egg in a nest. I can roll it out of the screened patio to cook and roll it back under cover when I'm done. No fear of melting the ceiling fan with a flashback or having to repaint a sooty porch ceiling.

Im not quite sure how this could happen. When I use the Egg as a smoker with the plate setter in very little heat escapes the dome and there is literally no way for any sparks to make their way out. Now if you were grilling steaks, yea fire will come out the top if you get it hot enough...

This sounds like complete BS. Who smokes meat at 700+ degree? No patio cover is going to just ignite from 250 degrees.

My patio cover is vinyl but at 10 feet up. I have checked the temp of it after cooking steaks wide open. Temp was only 10 degrees higher than ambient. Story is very fishy.

Sparks do at times float up and out of the top vent, even while cooking at low temps. Depending on the lump, it can be a crackling, spitty fire at 225 degrees. I doubt it ignited because of heat buildup.....much more likely an errant spark.

Call me cautious, but I've have experienced plenty of flashbacks (despite burping), embers spitting out the bottom during lighting, exploding eggplants, exploding baked potatoes, and all manner of nuttiness while cooking on my BGE. That's why I move the damn thing away from the house and out into the open air. I put my mini into a rolling stainless steel cart for the same reason. Takes just a few seconds to be prudent and cut the fire risk down considerably.

About the only thing I can think of is if embers floated up and he had a gutter full of dry leaves. But its been raining so much lately.

But again... Sparks while smoking meat? I have a Kamado Joe but I don't think I have ever seen sparks shoot out the top vent or bottom while at smoking temps.

At low temps, sure.....if the coal shifts, if a big piece burns in half and falls over, if pieces burn small enough to fall through the fire grate. Also if it's a breezy day and the bottom vent is pointed directly to receive good gusts.
