I agree. Funerals aren't the time for political expression. Ask those who organized the Dem pep rally at Wellstone's funeral.

Cops volunteered for their jobs then want to be above criticism. FTP.

Anyone who criticizes NYPD for what they view as a political move while not questioning the fact that the mayor spoke at the funeral is being dishonest.

The NYPD is no more than 50% white. I've yet to see a picture that shows a faithful representation of the force 'turning their back'. Bunch of white guys, who probably post on the poliboard with most of you crazies.

For clarity's sake, 53% of all NYPD employees are white, and 47% of employees on patrol are white.

If the family asked him to be there, then he should have spoken. Funerals are for the surviving family. I think de blasio is a POS, and I side with the cops on the issue. It shouldn't have happened at a funeral. That's all I'm saying.

-NYPD is just as much his family as anyone
-Does anyone know who paid for the funeral?

What are the families' opinions of the gesture? No one seems to know, yet many of you assume they oppose it. Such speculation is dishonest.

I can't imagine the police making this gesture without informing the family and gaining their consent in advance.

It would be a PR nightmare for the department if the widow displayed any kind of public outrage due to their actions. The union is media savvy enough to know they needed family approval first.

None of this is fact, just opinion.

When my Uncle was walking the beat in the 11226, The NYPD was overwhelmingly Irish and white. It was corrupt and a huge percentage of the officers were on the take. Crime was out of control.

The revitalization of NYC could never have occurred without a total reorganization of the NYPD. They are arguably the single best police force in America, in the greatest city in the world, Imho. You want bad cops, there area lot of other cities to check first. But frick yeah, I saw a cop shoot a puppy on the internet, so FTP.

I don't think a slain officer's funeral is the appropriate time or place to make a political statement

Agreed, especially since the NYPD asked protesters not to protest the day of the funeral out of respect for the deceased.
