Tikka's and TC Venture are damn accurate. Great buys.
I find my savage to be just a tad less accurate. Also a damn fine purchase.
I have no experience with Win 70's, so I cannot objectively comment.
Remy is for the birds......unless you customize everything on it.
Expensive and awesome purchase includes Styer, Cz 550, savage 10 fcp, Sako

Second whoever said the CZ. I think they are in the 800 range, but when your buying a gun that you will use the rest of your life it's tough to put a hard cap on it (at least for me). I would never spend thousands on a hunting rifle, but I wouldn't let a few hundred dollars stop me from buying what I really want. Just save for a few more months and get what you want. If I were you I'd go shoulder some and see what you like or don't like about them, and then read reviews on accuracy and reliability on the ones you liked and go from there.

Assuming you are a good shot out to 200 yards, you only need to answer one question. Do you want people to say, "Oh wow, let me ask you about that gun" before or after you pull the trigger and group the shots or kill the game?
Before: get what ever gun with a big price tag and shiny parts you want that comes with the best Johnny come lately story about accuracy.
After: Get a Savage axis or trophy hunter rifle for around 350 and take lots of photos with dead stuff.

This place is the record.
"I want a $600 rifle"
"Here's a pile of $800 rifles. Pick one, and get a new scope while you're at it"

If you have Sportmans warehouse close by, they have a Tikka with stainless fluted barrels for $619 right now.

I say tikka, especially if you can get a stainless fluted for $619. I just bought my dad a stainless tikka 7mm08 for Christmas and I own the t3 hunter in .308.

It's every board lol. There has been all kinds of super upgrades in the Tech Board also. Somebody asked about a 200 dollar bluetooth speaker and people were saying get this 500 dollar one.

I should have mentioned in the OP I already own a Savage Axxis Remy 710 / 770 Winchester Model 70
I'm looking for a step above those rifles without breaking the bank. Tikka seems to be the consensus maybe Ruger American..

Weatherby Vanguard Series II. It's well within your budget (tax included). I own this rifle in .308. Sub MOA guaranteed.

Here are some $800 rifles that if you do some smart shopping you can find in your price range or really close.

Depends on your future plans with the gun. If you want a gun that you will never upgrade, then Tikka is fine.
If you want a rifle that you can upgrade year to year and eventually have a really tricked out high end gun, get a Remington 700.
Remington and Savage Actions have more aftermarket upgrades than any other rifle. I am talking barrels, triggers, bolts, stocks, etc.
You can buy a $500 Remington 700 and put an addition $500 per year over the next 2-3 years and have a truly badass, custom rifle.

I don't think OP is shooting 1k with the rifle...no need to put an additional $2k in a remy 700. At this point in Remy quality he will need a new barrel asap.

Well it all depends on what a step above means to you.
dependability
accuracy
reliability
corrosion resistance
ease of cleaning
ability to kill stuff (it is hunting rifle)
Unless you are shooting greater than 400 yards, and have the skill to shoot as well as the rifle purchased there is no reason to find a gun "a step above"
but hey, its your money

I bought one last year in .270 for ~$300. Spent more on glass than the gun.
Shoots sub MOA using Core-Lokt's.

Buy a nice scope for the rifle you have if it shoots good enough already.
I step up in scope > step up in rifle IMO
$600 will get you an extremely nice scope.

Most manufactures offer 1" MOA out the box. The only thing I question with the "economy" and "entry level" rifles is in 40 years from now when I hand that rifle over to my future grandchild will it still be a 1" MOA gun? My dad had a Winchester economy model bolt action rifle that wouldn't group if the barrel was remotely warm, it was closer to 3-4" groupings. Cold shots were fine though.
