If you know beyond a doubt that you will hit your exact target, a headshot probably is more ethical. The problem is, none of us are perfect shots.

A vital shot gives you 8"x8" target for the animal to die quickly, maybe more. A headshot gives you a 2"x2" target. I personally dont want to blast a deer's nose off for the rest of it's life. But thats just me...

I've ear holed deer before when they were at close range. Never once have I screwed it up. Have buddies that do it damn near exclusively with does. They don't screw it up either. I prefer the double lung, but an ear hole at close range to an experienced deer shooter is not near as stupid as it's being made out to be. I agree it's bad policy to advocate it (which I'm kinda doing) because most people didn't grow up shooting shite like others did. But to those who did it is extremely effective with better recovery rates than probably any other shot placement.

All that said I tried to head shot a doe with a bow one time and had an awful experience. Still feel terrible about the deal.

Neither do I - and never have I - I know what I am capable of and what my equipment is capable of - anyone can make a bad shot and a bad shot at the vital area can be just as bad. Ethical is about a quick kill and 100% recovery - both shots have equal risks of being unethical if a bad shot is made.

I shot a doe between the eyes with my bow. She had two arrows in her already though and was kicking and hollering and flopping around in the corn pile There was blood everywhere. It was a pretty bad.

This thread raises an interesting question though: is it more ethical to attempt a head shot with a .243 or a shoulder shot? Both have astronomical odds of crippling a deer and not finding it.

No they don't.

You have more square inches of error shooting for the shoulder/neck/ribs area than you do shooting at the head.

It's not debatable. Your odds of fricking up are higher when attempting head shots.

A 2" square inside 100yds is all I need. I have never missed a head/neck shot - have I pulled up from the scope a lot and not shot yep.

My cousin used to brag about shooting does in the head, til one day he hit one wrong.
Don't know exactly where he hit her, but blood was found.

Smaller target and it moves more than the rest of the deer.

Don't worry. Your time is coming.

If you haven't had a deer run off, you haven't shot very many.

Shoot em where you feel comfortable when my time comes and I miss, I won't be the first one to post here that has claimed to make a "good" shot, find blood and never recover a deer, we don't jump on a poster and say it was unethical we just feel sorry for them and say maybe next time.....take advantage of the ranges in your area and become an expert with your guns...thanks for all your feedback
