Why are they shutting it down and what is the deal with Bama in the equation? I keep hearing people mention Bama and Bear Bryant when talking about UAB shutting down football.

UAB football loses a lot of money and has never been successful. There is no significant UAB fanbase. There are, however, a number of Bama-hating Aubies who attend UAB. They spout a lot of bullshite about a program no one cares about, including them.

i was wondering the same, it seems kinda crazy that a D1(fbs) football program can just be shut down. And its not like they were even a dog shite sun belt team(like an idaho or new mexico state), they were in conference USA for a long time.

UAB, during different periods of the football program, has tried to expand. This includes building an on campus stadium. The BOT, which is the University of Alabame system and has mostly UA football supporters, has declined any improvement project for the program. Hence, why most UAB people are upset. Keep in mind UAB is the largest employer in the state, and a cash cow for UA. I understand Bama's position, but see why the Blazers are pissed.

Because it's a total waste of money because of such little support.

Yeah, all those hospital workers in Birmingham don't care about Alabama and Auburn, and just want their own football team

This has been a raging debate for the last few days, and I still haven't seen a single actual UAB fan chime in. I see Troy fans, USA fans, ULM fans. Where are the UAB fans?

I don't want them to gain any steam either. A good UAB football program hurts us as much as the gumps. But that doesn't change why they are mad.

What are you fricking talking about?

ETA:

I guess this phag is a gump, but that is why UAB people are mad. Bama's BOT is keeping them from expanding. And you will have gumps come in defending the way their BOT has cut their funds.

There is no such thing as a good UAB program. That is impossible. Because the fans and the money support aren't there. Not only is it a silly reason to worry, there's nothing to even try to be worried about in the first place

No, their own apathetic fanbase is. Bama's BOT actually funds and subsidizes their entire existence. They should be thankful.

I've been surprised at the number of threads about this story whether its been on the MSB or coaching changes board.

I kind of feel sorry for the few who really follow UAB though.

it aint easy being the adopted red head in this state.

no one really cares about you unless you are Alabama or Auburn.

A bunch of uneducated rednecks running the show.

UAB, if it was her own system, would be the best school in the state. It size (student population) is on par with Bama and Auburn. There is a really awesome downtown vide around that area. The city has pumped a ton of money in the area. It has the potential to suck resources from AU and UA if it ever broke off. It is not some shitty commuter school the gumps make it out to be.

their medical school
Hmmm....

wiki:

quote:

The University of Alabama School of Medicine at UAB, is a public medical school located in Birmingham, Alabama with branch campuses in Huntsville, Montgomery, and at the University of Alabama College of Community Health Sciences in Tuscaloosa.

quote:

In 1945, the Medical College of Alabama was moved from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham and the University's Medical Center was founded. Later, in November 1966, the Extension Center and the Medical Center were merged to form the "University of Alabama in Birmingham," an organizational component of The University of Alabama. In 1969, UAB became an independent institution, one of three autonomous universities within the newly created University of Alabama System.
