If UAB were a lower division team that actually had the possibility of winning championships, people might care about them. UAB should go to FCS or D2 if they want to keep football. If UAB was playing in playoff games in Bham they would get support from Bama fans.

As it is, it does nothing for the school. The students didnt care, the alumni didnt care and the community didnt care.

Maybe now UAB can join a legit basketball conference and start focusing it's attention on being a basketball school.

I 10000x agree with this.

Anyone who goes to school during the evenings see nothing but Bama and Auburn car tags, t-shirts, and sweaters being worn.

Not necessarily. The plan isn't to make UAB basketball more attractive at the expense of Alabama. That's just not a win/win scenario for the system. In this decade Alabama and UAB were in the sweet 16 in the same tournament. UAB already recruits well, they sign guys that Alabama wants...they don't really need an annual series with a Alabama to get back on the map. That only cannibalizes the system and its counterproductive.

As you guys can tell - I'm a UAB alumni with two degrees from UAB. I've commented about this and no one seems interested. Everyone is commenting on whatever fits their world view - and not what is necessarily true.

I think there is a narrative being attempted by the "news" of Alabama, and perpetrated by the athletic department at my University. It doesn't help that more people who have nothing to do with the program, but who hate he U of A, comment as well.

The bottom line is . . .

Most UAB alumni and faculty DO NOT SUPPORT the football program and it is obvious from the attendance at the games. They give away paid tickets (paid for by who knows who) that allow more than just one person in (up to 4 per ticket). So, actual paid numbers are bogus. Most would be more supportive if the department did not just lie to everyone about it.

The faculty have had zero raises in over 5 years and most do not support the program. If you took a silent vote, I believe upwards of 75-80% would love it to be shut down. And, tuition has skyrocketed. Many of the buildings on campus are old (heck, the Humanities building did not have heat last week!). It is pathetic.

The so-called UAB foundation says they now have the money to help support the program. But if you listen, what they really say is they can get the money raised, not that they have it. Where the hell have they been the last 10 years!!?? It is a lie, they never had it nor attempted to get it. I am a giving alumni and have not once been asked about football.

Security at UAB is also awful and underfunded. We had 4 students sexually assaulted in a UAB parking deck within the last few months. We've had murders, kidnappings, and robberies. Again pathetic.

Real fans of the school, see these things. We see our once proud University handing out money to a football program with zero return, while our school needs soo much more.

Most all of my fellow UAB alumni agree with me and we have let our feelings known. It looks like they are finally doing something about it.

Good post.

That one game wouldn't hurt Alabama. For arguments sake, yes , I know LSU's home basketball attendance is atrocious. Now that we've gotten that addressed, Alabama's pre SEC home crowds are pretty bad and there is zero buzz. A UAB-Alabama basketball series would be good for both sides.

I've mentioned it a couple of times in other threads, but I took my daughter to the Marshall game. They handed out family 4 pack tickets at elementary schools. She's in the Vestavia school system. The letter with it was from the UAB dept of education, or college of education. Can't remember which, but either way it was paid for by someone. Two of us went, but it probably counted as 4 paid attendees.

Also, my father has at least two degrees from UAB, and he went to med school at USA. My aunt went to UAB as well. This was in the late 70s before football was started. All of the older alumni like them are Alabama football fans. It is just how it was back then. Bama played a bunch of big games in Birmingham before a UAB football program was even thought of. The UAB students would go to those games. Dad said they'd go hang out in the bars around Legion Field and go to the games every time they were playing in Birmingham, which was a good bit. And all of the Iron Bowl history in Birmingham helped this as well. By the time UAB football started, it was like a little niche market and there wasn't a ton of support from day 1.

I personally hate to see the team shut down. And this is coming from a Troy fan who would normally see this as an opportunity for Troy to advance their own program with the sudden loss of another FBS school in the state. It has been a decent little rivalry over the past 8-10 years.

Sad Sad day for the Blazers!!!

My wife actually received her Masters degree from UAB and we lived in Birmingham for 7 years. Great town, but NO ONE supports the Blazers. Birmingham is a BAMA town with a few Aubies. There are more LSU fans in Birmingham than UAB fans. Legion Field is a DUMP in the middle of the Ghetto, which doesn't help attract fans to the games.

South Alabama was going to start a series with UAB too. I think it was supposed to happen in 2015 or 2016?

Basically it is still bama fans' fault. I dont really care though. You can root for whatever team you want to. If people who go to UAB want to root for bama or auburn, then they can do that. They dont have to support UAB athletics. And it seems like that is exactly what is going on. So naturally the 3 UAB fans are going to be butt hurt.

These outraged "fams" of UAB only donate about $2 million a year to the athletic department. But it's all Bama's fault
