Actually they do. Alabama football received 5.5million from the university system and only paid back 4.4 million in 2012. Therefore Alabama is a welfare queen and shoudl close down.
What is good for the goose is good for the gander
Alabama's athletic department made over $20 million last year.

doesn't change the fact that it's a huge money pit and this will allow UAB to cut some other title IX "sports"
I wouldn't say huge, plenty of others schools lose a lot more, this isn't about title IX at all.

You do know they just set up a football foundation, and had funds to set up and indoor practice facility but the administration literally would not take it?

It's official- they are shutting down UAB football.

Time to start up Rammer Jammer....
In all seriousness, UAB football is an afterthought in Bham. You could build a small stadium but that doesn't mean it would do any good. People in Birmingham aren't going to skip watching an Alabama or Auburn game so they can go watch UAB. This isn't the same as the Barons building a stadium downtown and people go in the summertime when football season isn't in going on.
UAB should focus all of their attention on basketball...where they have a realistic shot of not just competing, but dominating Alabama and Auburn.

I don't understand why the UAT fans are so giddy about people like Bryant Jr slapping UAB around.
It is weird. A strong UAB only helps their university system as a whole. By eventually killing off the athletic department and turning UAB back to a true commuter school will at best, only be a small gain for Tuscaloosa (and Auburn actually) and a long term hit on the university system as a whole. UAB is already on shaky ground in terms of competition for the best researchers, grant funding, residents and fellows for anything medically or science related.
Birmingham has already shown with regions field that moving a stadium to a better location drums up more support. Same with railroad park, it brings a reason to be downtown. Taking away anything from helping make Birmingham better will hurt the school and eventually the system. Anybody saying anything else is being disingenuous.

Would they have to drop out of C-USA with no football, or is that not a requirement for the conference?

I think they will have to drop out. Which maybe gives them a chance to join a basketball centric conference.

I don't think C-USA has any non football members. They might end up back in the Sun Belt. With UA-Little Rock and UT Arlington in the Belt with no football, it would make sense. Idaho and NM State are football only members. And they were a previous member, way back before C-USA started.

Why would you pay out the arse for a program with zero support.

Why can't they just drop down to FCS and then they don't "compete?" Why are they going scorched Earth on their arse? Is there an enrollment stipulation or something? I mean Sam Houston is approaching 20K students and they're in FCS.

And for those that think UAB football is a money pit.
LINK
Contention: UAB is losing far more on athletics than other schools.
Verdict: False. According to an AL.com analysis of the USA Today data, 125 schools have athletic programs subsidized at a higher percentage than UAB. UAB's subsidy is about the same as Colorado State, Ohio, Virginia Commonwealth or New Hampshire. Some 33 schools are subsidized at higher dollar figures, including Cincinnati, Kent State, James Madison and Houston. Rutgers and UNLV actually posted double the subsidy as UAB.
If you take the subsidies out of the mix and look simply at the bottom line, 36 schools across the country are hemorrhaging more than UAB. Rutgers and UNLV are bleeding money at twice the rate of UAB.
Kristi Dosh of Campus Insiders reports that UAB's $7.2 million in football revenue last year ranked 98th overall in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Troy University pulled in less revenue, with $6.7 million, and South Alabama earned only $5.8 million.

I was the biggest supporter of building a baseball stadium downtown. It made sense. For Barons games, people bring their families and it is an event during the summer time. That's what minor league baseball specializes in. UAB building a small stadium would not have the same effect. Sure, a stadium would be better than some abandoned warehouse, but its not like growth downtown will be hampered by the lack of UAB football. In the fall, Birmingham is focused on college football....but that doesn't mean it is (or could be) focused on UAB football. Fans aren't going to miss Bama or AU games in order to watch UAB play Marshall.

I live 10 mins from UABs campus. If they had a stadium in a safe part of town, I would have season tickets. No way I am taking my two small kids to LF. We already attend UAB baseball, and Barons games.

So maybe they should be more fiscally responsible and pay the school back instead of putting in a waterfall.
