Yes this. Some of my other favorites are Rec, Insidious, and The Descent. For some good comedy horror, Shaun of the Dead, Evil Dead 2, and Tucker and Dale vs Evil.

Insidious would be good for your situation.

Poltergeist or The Conjuring should do the trick

Trick R Treat. It's the perfect Halloween movie. The only thing in it that might be questionable is there's a couple of scenes where you think a couple of sorority girls are looking to hook up with some losers and they wear suggestive halloween costumes and a girl talks about it going to be "her first time", but it's nothing graphic. Alien

The Thing (pretty gory, but a great film - shouldn't shock kids of this generation)

Psycho (more of a thriller, but the classics never fail)

High quality films with lasting cultural value.

ETA: I concur with Poltergeist, too. Might even be too tame for today's generation to be considered a horror movie, although some scenes will get them there.

Ditto for Lost Boys.

If you're going to mention Poltergeist, I might add The Frighteners too. It's a likable movie, though not quite what you'd say was good. It's mostly a very PG movie for the most part but I think they were told that one pivotal shot was going to make it R so they decided to add in a bunch of other gorey stuff but it's not bad at all compared to today's movies. It was Michael J Fox's last movie before he went to television.

IMDB has a "parents guide" for most movies showing the reason it is rated what it is rated.

I recently rewatched Scream with my daughter because she wanted to watch a horror movie.

Drag Me to Hell

Don't bother with Insidious. It's just Poltergeist all over again, but not near as good.

Except the fact that they have a red demon.
