Just want to says thanks for all the great recs in NOLA a while back. Today we had lunch at Bon Ton Cafe and I had the half redfish bon ton/alzina. It was delicious. For dinner this evening we chose Cochon and I had the cochon plate which was so tender it fell apart in my mouth. I think we are doing butcher for lunch and peche for dinner. So many options, I just want to try every restaurant we pass.

The only thing about Cafe Bon Ton is I felt way underdressed there. I was still in my driving clothes when we went. I thought it was more of a casual atmosphere but I was the only person in the restaurant not wearing a suite. After leaving I noticed there was a federal courthouse down the street. Fairly certain that is where most of the foot traffic was coming from.

Donald Link much? I'd have to throw in a La Boca, Patois, Bayona, La Petite...something a bit more understated.

Saw a couple of places on Bourbon I was interested in trying like galatoires (sp?) and Arnauds. The reason for Cochon and butcher is I was trying to stay within walking distance because they are near the convention center.

Avoid those.

Hit another Link spot and try Herbsaint, one of the best places in town.

Galatoire's is a neat experience but in terms of food it coasts by on reputation. I still like it, but wouldn't recommend it for your purposes. Arnaud's is alright but wouldn't make a point to go. Might as well throw out Antoine's - don't ever go there.

+1
A lot to be said about New Orleans restaurants with the bravery to do something besides decadent, in-your-face dishes.

Galatoires would be fun for you I'd bet. If check it out if you get a chance.
Can't go wrong with Peche either, even if it is another Link spot

You can make a day of it at Galatoire's. I love the food and the atmosphere. Much of it is old New Orleans fare, which I happen to like very much. Oysters Rockefeller are delicious. I love the souffled potatoes, fried eggplant, crab or shrimp Maison....I could go on and on... Drink... order an app....drink....eat the app...drink....order the entree...drink...eat the entree....drink....order dessert...drink...eat dessert....order Cafe Brulot....nap time.

I'm putting this on a t-shirt now!
Gris, did you hear the old chef from Muriel's (Veney) is back? I know that's one you're always touting.

I didn't hear that. I don't know if I recall that chef. The first one I remember is the one who created the goat cheese crepe apps. Not Scott Boswell, but before him. I believe his name started with an S. He's run a few restaurants since then. One was in a hotel in the FQ and I think he may have opened one in the Warehouse District after that. He's of foreign descent, but my mind is blank.
I find Muriel's to be solid and good for a visitor or someone else on a budget with the fixed price deals. It's certainly not the best restaurant out there by any means. Good location and good atmosphere.
ETA: Guy Sockrider! I remembered and his most recent endeavor was Tomas Bistro.
