The French have a pretty awesome, if relatively small, military.

Lot of ignorance on display regarding the french military.

I guess these ISIS guys are just trying to force everyone to line up against them.

How many hostages do they currently have? I would have to imagine they are running thin.

Id imagine if you just dressed like an american and hung out at a cafe until late in one of these countries, then walked home you could get snatched up pretty quickly

You mean a second or third rate military power. Please enlighten us, sir. Inquiring minds want to know.

my comment was more about their pussy nature when dealing with terrorism and their hesitancy to help their "ally" when called upon...

i wasn't making a comment about their "power" as a military force, as i have not the slightest clue to what degree France is operating on these days...

It's one of the fortunate side effects of de Gaulle's old "third pole" politics. He didn't want to rely too heavily on the United States/United Kingdom during the Cold War and frankly didn't trust us too much (and after some of the stupid frick frick games FDR and Churchill played with him, I probably wouldn't have, either). He was bound and determined to keep the French military among the absolute best in the world in quality because of this, and they are lightyears ahead of every other Western country not named USA/UK - they are very good, maybe the most powerful in the world after US/Russia/China.

I've worked with them before and came away very impressed. Contrary to popular belief, they're tough as nails, too.
