I ordered half a dozen tamales and the famous roast beef poboy. The tamales tasted good, but there was no masa (?) I'm no tamale expert, but isn't there supposed to be masa? The poboy was very good, no doubt, but it wasn't the near-religious experience I was expecting based on what many had told me.

should have gone with the 4 cheese fries with gravy instead of tamales.

whenever it's built up that much, it's never going to be as good. but it's still best in the city, IMO.

Agreed.

And I always get a shrimp poboy and the cheese fries with gravy as well. Wife likes the crawfish pies.

I do really like their RB poboy, but I liked it before I started reading a lot on this board. I could see where it might be overhyped.

Never had the tamales. How is it even possible to make tamales without masa? I'm confused.

Personally, I love their tamales. But the cheese fries with debris gravy could possibly change your life (only slight hyperbole ). I also think the have a good pizza there too.

Agreed. I haven't been in a long time, but it is a good facsimile of a New Orleans neighborhood joint.

Was $31.60 -- sorry but I refuse to shell out that much for a poboy.

Don't get me wrong, the poboy was very good. As for the tamales, it was basically just the meat filling inside the wrapping.

Softshell poboy was $31? Was that for a large? That seems high.

Weird. Maybe I'll order them next time just cause I'm curious now.

Yes -- the 5" was $16+, and the large (9") was $31+

Who told you it was going to be "near-religous"?

It's an adequate place. That's it.
