Just put in a pool and subsequent concrete and have created a few areas that are not conducive to my big grass clipping slinging Gravely. So I went to Lowes in search of a small push mower with a bagger. Then I saw these reel mowers for half the money. So I left lowes empty handed and figured I'd do some research. This is my research. Tia. Will one if these 150ish dollar reel mowers create a small well cut area of lawn in am efficient manner or should I buy a $270 gas mower?

I looked into them in the past, and decided to pass. Id I remember right, even a small twig can jamb it up, though someone will probably be through with some first hand accounts...

Sears always has some nice reel mowers with bags. Several models for under $100. Wouldn't be much of a loss to try one.

Reel mowers actually cut better than rotary type mowers, because they "cut" the grass as opposed to "chewing" it like rotary mowers. As mentioned by other posters, they cannot handle rocks, sticks and other debris, but for a small area they are hard to beat. All mowers used to cut the greens and tee boxes at golf courses are reel type mowers that bag the clippings.

The spots I'm gonna cut won't have sticks or rocks much at all. Just grass. I'm not sure if the ones I looked at had bag attachments though so I'll have to check.

I've got one. It's really great if you've got uniform, lush grass. If you've got a bunch of clumps of crap because you live in an unfriendly, democrat run, gun hating state that is known for it's horrible droughts meaning that you can't water your freekin lawn and you're left with clumps of shitty grass...then it's best to use a weed eater.

Not really applicable anymore. Most are self sharpening.

Keep in mind they are momentum driven, so you need at least a few inches of run up.

Good for a small flat yard with no sticks in it. Otherwise, they are a pain in the arse.

I used to mow greens in high school. I would add to your list that you had better not have any weeds in the lawn as well. The reel mower hates weeds.

My GF has one at the Mid-city house. Guess who gets to use it?

It jambs up with any debris, It will not cut a seed-head over 6-8". PITA unless you have the finest grass around, then it will make a nice well cut small area.

I'm curious how that works.

Over 1.5" tall most golf courses are getting away from reels. Too expensive.
