i have decided to get myself a mountain bike. i went riding with a buddy this past weekend at the comite trails and enjoyed it, but i was riding on his spare bike and i want to get one for myself. i was seeking some suggestions on a good entry level bike probably around 500-600 dollars.

i posted on the OB but that place is dead this time of day and i figured there may be some bikers on this board. thanks.

If you can shell out $900 you'll get A LOT more for your money and have a bike where you can upgrade parts as you go. $600 will get you a crap bike that you probably won't be satisfied with if you really get into it. Look at Scott. They make some great bikes for around that price point.

I'm assuming you're looking for a hard tail, BTW.

Craigslist, if you live near a major city you cAn get a good bike for a fraction of the price. That will get you started, then talk to people you meet on the trails, try out bikes and so on. After riding for a while, Decide what you like and then get a new one if you want it.

There isn't one. Buy used.

If I were getting entry level with that price range right now i'd get a Giant or a trek Marlin or trek Xcaliber. Best bang for your buck IMO.

Eta: and I'd hands down get a 29er

If you are going to be riding Comite or really anything other than the streets I really suggest going a little deeper. The components on a $500 are generally shite and will break.

Yea...for Colorado. Zero reason to own that bike in Louisiana, though. Assuming the OP lives in LA.

There's no point in buying something new at that price point. You'll get much more for your money looking at used bikes. All of the bike companies make excellent bikes now. Very little difference between brands.

I take it a hair is not much, so just save up a little more than make the purchase.

Oh wait, that is what I want.

You can get onto a good bike for 5 to 600 bucks. Check the big name brands in that price range.

You may be able to get a really good bike for that price on craigslist.

If I have more time in a bit I'll help out.

I have a fuji mountain bike. I really enjoy it. Hardtail of course. I think i got it on sale around $550.

Whatever you do make sure your tires are 29inches. Take rocks/roots like a champ. smooth ride.
