Haha, this is true. Once you step it up to something nice you'll hate riding anything less.

So you know what a nice bike feels like, find a deal on craigslist or keep saving a little more.

That sucks.

My husband spent way more on his. He saved up for it for a long time though.

His first bike he bought the frame from another mountain biking buddy for cheap and just basically built up the bike he wanted.

Like mentioned, buying used from someone who bought a bike, rode it twice, and decided it wasn't for them is a good start if you can be patient and are willing to wait for a good deal. All 3 of the bikes I've purchased(Raleigh Misceo, Specialized CrossTrail, & Trek Mamba) are all very much entry level but by buying used I saved big $$$. For example the Mamba retailed around $900, I paid $450 for it and the guy threw in a $200 pickup bed bike rail that I use often and a Garmin GPS that I sold on Ebay for $250. I practially stole that deal.

That looks like a marriage destroyer right there.

I've been told by older active married couples never to buy a tandem anything if you want your marriage to last(bike, kayak, etc).

Trek, Scott, and Cannondale are what you should focus on, Cannondale being at the top of the list.

I personally ride a Trek Revel 1 (2013) and got it for $450 new.

I take this on some serious backcountry downhill rides in the Rockies, and it's just fine. Obviously, it won't compete with a full suspension, but unless you are planning on moving to a ski town and taking this down the fire access road every weekend, you don't need anything fancy.

$500 will get you a solid Trek/Giant with disc brakes. If you want clipless pedals and all the new bells and whistles, you can easily upgrade parts of these bikes.

My friend has a single speed road bike he bought from that site. It has held up really well. Of course there aren't as many moving parts as on a geared MTB.

For the most part you will receive a generic Taiwanese frame (the big bike companies may buy from the same place) but pretty good components. If you plan well and get the right stuff you can get a better frame later on and then swap parts.

Keep in mind fit on a bike is really important and you may be gambling by buying online.
