I was talking to someone earlier about me hunting public land this year. I mentioned I just got a go devil and wanted to check out Joyce Wma.....

He told me a while back a hunter disappeared and all they found of him was his gear.

Is this a true story?

Dont know but my lil bro has poked around in there, the center of that area has some serious flotons and holes that you could go threw or in a be a goner.

That being said he found some gorgeous cypress and tupelo swamp that we want to possible hunt.

The biologist told me there are super old deer back there, but it's hard hunting and kinda dangerous. I been hunting uplands ever since; swamp deer taste. Nasty anyway. Stay outta a Joyce if ya know what's good for ya.......

I grew up hunting the marsh from Lewisburg to Ponchatoula. Hunting deer in the marsh is rough going

I duck hunt the hell out of Joyce. If you're smart about hunting, I don't think it's anymore dangerous than anywhere else. Don't wade it. Have a good batteries in your GPS bc it is easy to get lost. Deer are huge in Joyce. I don't know if you recall the guy in lasm a few years ago that killed all the 140+ Bucks? Well, I ran into him scouting and he was very informative about areas I never even thought about going to hunt. That old man knows his way around that swamp. Good luck if you try it.

I think I'm gonna put in at north pass and head up to middle bayou and bail off in a pothole somewhere for teal season...

Seems like it would be productive with all the pressure from the prairie in manchac

Anything in life can be dangerous. Joyce is just a swamp, with swamp type issues, snakes, gators, mosquitoes. At the end of the day it's what most of Louisiana looked like 150 years ago on the coast, I recommend giving it a try for the heritage of hunting it. Just bring hip boots and a good thermacell or two.

why is it any more dangerous to wade in Joyce than any other flooded cypress swamp? In the marsh areas, yeah it's dumb to try and wade but that's true of any marsh (you sink up to your hips). but elsewhere i don't get why it's considered dangerous.

i'll give you one thing though, it's a pain in the arse to get anywhere in the interior.

I have stepped into pull-boat ditches that you can't even tell are there and the only thing that kept me from going under was holding my gun sideways. Be careful stalking

The wax is more of a Sandy marsh, Joyce has pockets of mud that's not forgiving. The limited access area is nasty. If it has a good bit of water it's easy to get around in a pirouge, just don't get out and watch step on islands. I'd just be careful wherever you go there.

I am not aware of a hunter going missing in Joyce and never being found.

and neither is a pretty high ranking retired LDWF fella.

I watched a youtube doc. on missing people in National Parks, Refuges, etc. The stories that were told are pretty crazy.

quote:

Missing-411 is the first comprehensive book about people who have disappeared in the wilds of North America. It’s understood that people routinely get lost, some want to disappear but this story is about the unusual. Nobody has ever studied the archives for similarities, traits and geographical clusters of missing people, until now.

Ive hunted Joyce with a climber. I had to be pulled out a bog because I sank to my thighs with climber and gear on my back. We put in at Lee's and went South. Plenty tracks and sign.

Very difficult terrain but once you find your path to your spot it sure is a beautiful place sitting 20 foot up amongst the tupelos and cypress. We heard large animals splashing through but not sure if hogs or deer.

Good luck. Bump with pics if you go.

Check the Dec2011 LAsportsman edition. Article with Ricky Hano who has hunted Joyce a long time. Talks about a hunter that went missing and only found his jacket and pirogue... Very good article for hunting Joyce.

Hunted Joyce a few times in college. We put in a lee's every time. Drug a small job boat behind a bigger boat to a hole off the river. Plan was to carry the little boat to a land locked pond back there, but we got turned around and couldn't find it in the dark so we just hunted the hole off the river. Went exploring later and got lost as a mother fricker. Some tough terrain to walk around in, especially in waders.

Watch out for Shelby. He will run you over if you aren't careful
