Seems like the movies are all about splosions, comic book characters, and sequels. What are some recent movies that had truly original ideas?

Her and Inception come to mind.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is probably my favorite in this category.

Inception

Not sure how original this idea was but I liked it a lot.

I really thought Her differed from Lars and the Real Girl in that there were many people who were in love with these "programs". In Lars, everyone just kind of let's him be crazy.

Changing one plot detail doesn't make it an original story, or one of the most original stories recently

They just added a twist of Smart House into it

INB4 Drive.
Drive was a remake of Thief so not so original. And I am sure Thief probably was a remake of some earlier film.

Yea, I wouldn't call extremely original, but I thought it was cool how they took us into a very inventive future. I thought the message of the movie was a different one than Lars.

Well, to be fair, if we're going to down the rabbit hole of X being a remake of Y which was a remake of Z, we need to get out of the way that there are only so many plots in literature.

Aristotle said 2, others have posited 7, others 20, or 36. Regardless, literature and film cannibalizes itself and everything is based off something else which is based off something else which is based off something else, etc. etc. ad infinitum.

The truth of the matter is this: Originality is the ability to obscure your sources.

So, with that out of the way, I'm going to say Inception was my favorite of the most recent ones.

I also thoroughly enjoyed American Hustle and Moonrise Kingdom.
