Punch Drunk Love and Boogie Nights were pretty original.

but that is farther back.

Recently...Robot and Frank was pretty original

Not only that but it also came out right as the Internet was really starting to boom in the US so the idea of "Wait.. are we actually in a computer?" couldn't have come out at a better time.

Not sure if mentioned yet, but Unforgiven was a pretty original take on the western genre.

One thing I couldn't ever get past, though, was the Schofield Kid finding Clint Eastwood at the beginning of the movie. Wasn't he still using his old name? If he was, wouldn't someone have found him by then and brought him to justice for his past crimes? Seems like a plot hole to me that they could probably have explained away by having him change his name and the kid saying something about how he's been looking for him for a long time.
