I thought it was good. Sly gave a pretty good performance, IMO, and Liotta was great.

Sly was just so doggone vulnerable in that performance.

Stallone is a decent actor with the right vehicle.

Its odd because it was so hyped when it was in production for reasons outside of the movie (Stallone working for scale, giving his all for a dramatic performance, putting on weight, the A list that ended up in the film around him). It seemed like people, including me were disappointed when it came out. I watched it again a year or two ago and really liked it. Stallone is very good and there are some great performances in supporting roles, too.

Then I need to watch it again because I thought it was crap when I saw it in theatres.

This one seems like it may get better with time.

Definitely underrated. It's in my top 20. Stallone's best performance since Rocky IMO.

Ray Liotta also steals the show a bit.

Ray Liotta scares me so much in roles like this

He's fantastic in Place Beyond the Pines

I'm a huge fan of this movie. apparently, Stallone couldn't get a serious role after this, and he put on a ton of weight for this role and waived his usual massive fee to do it. It's why he's now spending his twilight years making as many Expendables movies as he can. He tried to go legit, but Hollywood wouldn't let him.

Loaded cast. One of the few times I don't despise Michael Rappaport.

such a shame because I love Stallone in dramatic roles

I think he'd be perfect in a movie similar to The Wrestler. He could nail it

I agree. but he won't do it, and why should he? He made an effort to do more serious work, and his phone didn't ring for more roles, despite doing a great job in CopLand. He'll have to manage by cashing those massive checks for movies he could do in his sleep.

De Niro's IDGAF delivery here is priceless:

Moe Tilden: What about him? frick him.

Sheriff Freddy Heflin: What about Donlan?

Moe Tilden: frick him too.

Sheriff Freddy Heflin: What about Joey Randone?

Moe Tilden: He fell off a building. Don't you read the papers?
