This is cool as shite. Will we one day have remote surgeons doing procedures from thousands of miles away?

Yeah, but can you put your dick in it?

One step closer to machine rule

Looks cool but whats the fricking point?

The point is they could refine the interface to the point where machine repairs or surgeries can be done from thousands of miles away. You don't see that?

Pretty cool, but

Now all they need to do is add sensory gloves to allow the user to feel that which (s)he is touching.

Yeah, no tactile response or feedback is going to limit things.

IIRC I read a story of a local urologist doing a robotic surgery in a patient somewhere in the carribean remotely over the internet. This was in the last 5 or so years.

It's been done. Mostly it's done as a "because we can" measure. Robot surgery is still young and has limited necessity with minor conveniences. Performing surgeries from outside the building are only as reliable as your internet connection, and thus they require a surgeon capable of doing the procedure on site with the patient at all times anyway.
In terms of their use in emergency situations, they're essentially useless. They take way longer to set up than a laparotomy (knifing someone open) or laparascopy (scope) in trauma/emergency settings.
It's still really neat stuff, though. You get views and dexterity that are unachievable by other means. You also get glitches that go along with computer systems to balance it out.

This. Remote surgery will never be practical.

Agreed but this is just a step. Next one maybe is haptic feedback gloves.
I see that the difference between the OP and the rest of us is that he immediately went for remote surgery and we went straight to its porn potential.

clearly.

Obviously not with blocky-arse hand imprints. But think of those elevated blocks as individual pixels, and imagine improvements in the technology via increasing the "pixels" by several orders of magnitude, adding subpixels, and diversifying the materials that can be used for the display. Then the possibilities get a little more interesting. Plus, by that point, you really could put your dick in it.

Even with the technology to literally transport my hand molecule-for-molecule, robotic surgery would be a superior "across the world" model for non-emergent surgeries. Competent surgeons are a dime a dozen, and they're limited by bone structure and wrists. This isn't the case for robots. Their instruments articulate around 360 degrees and through probably 270 in the other direction while maintaining mono- and bi-polar energy. That said, I'll never sign up to have one done on me until wild infrastructure changes occur worldwide that, essentially, will never come.
I did, however, hear a story about the forcep on one of the robots grabbing on to a patient's iliac vessels and "freezing." It was rebooted twice and still could not control that arm. The doctor then kicked the console, and it actually let the vessel go. Maybe they are more human than I give them credit for.
ETA: But there are lots and lots of other practical applications. The porn industry will probably run the state of Utah dry with this sort of thing.
