A Canadian woman who parked her car in the left lane of a highway to help ducks by the side of the road has been charged with two counts of criminal negligence and dangerous driving causing death after a motorist crashed into her car, resulting in the death of the driver and his 16-year-old daughter.

Emma Czornobaj, 25, was convicted by a jury and could face up to life in prison. When Czornobaj stopped on the side of a provincial highway south of Montreal to aid the wandering ducks, Andre Roy, 50, slammed into Czornobaj's car on his motorcycle. The woman told the court that she is an animal lover and intended to take the ducks home. She has been released until her pre-sentence hearing on August 8.

The case's prosecutor, Annie-Claude Chasse, told the court, "What we hope is that a clear message is sent to society that we do not stop on the highway for animals. It's not worth it."

Well before the animal loving hippies come out, how would you feel if that was your 16 yr. old daughter that died?

I don't think I would let my 16 year old daughter on the back of my motorcycle on a busy highway...but I see your point.

Absolutely crushed and heartbroken.

I'm surprised, though, that this is even an issue. If she had time to stop and get out of the car, he had plenty of time to see her car there and either stop himself or overtake.

Did she stop just behind a sharp curve or steep incline? Because even though stopping in the left lane is stupid, running into a parked car stopped in the left lane is stupider.

She was dumb for stopping on a highway but whoever hit her should've been able to stop if not following too close unless there was an obstructed view. But jail time is stupid. This is something I expect from the US. I'm surprised Canada's justice system is so retarded.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the difference is between if she suddenly braked to a stop when animals ran in front of her car (a pretty normal reaction) and the guy running into her because he was closer and not paying attention versus her being parked and him not paying attention.

I mean, her actions ultimately caused two fatalities. Although from reading the thread only, it appears she was stopped for a long enough time where her car was easily avoidable.

She'd have been better off driving drunk and killing someone, apparently

Possible life in prison because someone else rear ended her vehicle?

I feel like there is something missing from this article. Was this at night and she flipped her lights off? Was it around a curve or behind the apex of a hill?

Something doesn't add up.

Idk, you're on a highway going high speeds and you don't really expect someone to just be at a complete stop in a friggin lane.

She caused two deaths but there's usually a difference between negligence and murder. There's no reason she should go to prison. Someone dumb enough to stop to get a duck isn't gonna remember this case and say," nah I'm afraid of prison."

Debatable in the sense that the following motorist rear ended her. If he had enough time to react and or was not following at a safe distance then his actions could be a superceding cause.

If I had to guess that's where the wreck less endangerment is coming into play. She stopped her car in a traveling lane and got out. It was also probably in a blind spot for somebody on a motorcycle to hit it.

If she pulls her car over on the side of the road, no one dies and she doesn't go to jail.

I think she should go to jail. The article said "faces life," I doubt she gets anything excessive, but I think she should serve some time.

If she had time to park and get out. How can you possibly say the motorcycle was following too close?

I wonder what would have been the difference if she had simply had car trouble and broke down in the left lane.....
