I prefer to vacuum packing fish to freeze but the food saver I bought is crap.

Is there another brand that doesn't suck (consumer grade)?

My food saver works when it wants to. If I'm packing filets, I melt one end, cut the bag a certain size, then attempt to vac and seal. It might take 3-4 attempts to actually get it vacuumed. And if you don't have your finger hovering over the stop button, it'll start to seal the other end. Then you've got to cut your bag shorter and retry.

I also dry my filets with a paper towel and the trough needs to be cleaned out almost every time.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

I've found mine crapping out around year 5. The foam lip that goes around the liquid trap wears out, and the damn thing doesn't seal as well as it used to.

Ive got the Cabelas and it beats the shite out of Foodsaver.

ITS made for Cabelas by a leading commercial manufacturer, forget the brand.

You know you need to feed the open end of the bag slightly into that crevasse and not just simply close the lid on the bag over the heat sealing strip, right? I made this mistake in my first attempts.

Also know that for the best seal, fold the top part of the bags outward before placing food in them, so that when you unfold them, the seal area will be nice and clean/dry/uncontaminated.

I'm very pleased with my foodsaver and it's already paid for itself more than once.

The sealer only works on two ends. Are you cutting your bags and attempting to seal on other ends?

I've had a FoodSaver for about 4 years and about the only time I've had a problem, it's normally with a bad bag. It's also great for resealing things like chips in their original bags.

I've had my foodsaver all this time and had no idea it could do this. I've just sealed up a loose bag of pretzels and I'm kicking myself for not realizing sooner. I love peanuts so I'll be utilizing this regularly.

Thanks Skillet.
