Anyone have one/like them? I really don't like having more hard drives than I have to. I currently have 1 ssd for my windows installation and a couple hdds for the heavy lifting.

I'd like to get a new hybrid drive if it means that my system will boot as fast as a normal ssd, but with the ability to store massive amounts in my user directories.

Thoughts?

If SATA ports aren't at a premium for you, it's unnecessary, and I would continue to buy a smallish SSD with one, large (2-4TB) HDD. I believe it was Stout who pointed out to me something I hadn't previously considered, which is what do you do when one half of that drive fails? It's an SSD and an HDD inside of one case, but can you use them separately (ie, when the HDD inevitably fails, will the ssd still be usable)?

I have an SSD on my MBP and a Fusion on my iMac. Both are faster than a standard hard drive but I can still tell a difference between the SSD and the Fusion.

worth every penny. it made night and day difference on my already fast i7 system. SSD is a MUST have imo.

Stick with the standalone SSD for best performance, and reroute your user directories/libraries to a hard drive.

Ssd is the only way to go imo

Yall should read more than the first sentence of the OP. He has an SSD, so he knows they're the shite. He was wondering if he should switch to a hybrid drive to have the speed of an SSD and the capacity of an HDD on one device so that he could store more of his files in "one place."

Got one in my MBP. It's fast but if it bricks, work paid for it

I understood perfectly what he said. I'll be more clear. NO. KEEP A SEPARATE SSD AND HDD WITH ALL YOUR NON-IMPORTANT PROGRAMS/FILES. I was just confirming that ssd is the tits with the last sentence

Better?

And "so" in my post is supposed to be "os"...phone auto-corrected

Sorry. I was just giving my opinion. I dont really see the need in any type of hybrid. My ssd with the hdd works like a dream for me.

The hybrid drives are a great idea and the cost premium is small. However with such a small SSD "cache" size, I would imagine that it would have a shorter lifespan. However that could be in your replacement timeframe anyways

They're mainly for people with laptops that want a boost in speed, but also need the storage capacity of a traditional HDD.

A laptop would make sense bc of the limited size. For a desktop the separate drives work great in my experience.

Custom built PC

ETA: Sorry, updated thread title slightly. Looking for comparisons of a hybrids vs a SSD+HDD setup

Yep. I just upgraded our stations to raided SSDs and switched to a NAS server (a few months earlier) on my gigabit switch and it runs very smooth.
