The Baton Rouge brood(XXII)is expected this year. Our area only has annual ones, so I've never experienced the sights and sounds of a periodical emergence. Here's a map.

We were in Tunica Hills last weekend and they were so loud it sounded like an alien invasion.

I haven't heard them too much around BR yet.

Here's one right after he crawled out of the ground the other day. Still had dirt on him. There were hundreds in my yard just like him.

Here's one the next morning. He was tired from molting and didn't really move for an hour or so of my children playing with it. Then he got his shite together and flew. Took a while to catch him in the house. Wife was super-excited.

Bastards are annoying. Noticing they are eating leaves off my trees and corn stalks.

The sheriff dept has gotten several calls about them. Most complaints are people saying they hear a siren sounding, alarm, transformers buzzing, or wanting to know if we are gonna spray for them. Damn people move to the country then freak out when they step in a little cow shite.

Pretty sure they do not eat as adults other than sucking some plant sap.

And possums. I heard a possum outside my window the other night. Opened bedroom window and shot him. Went outside to pick him up and he had one in his mouth. That's when I looked around and saw all of them.

Picked one up and he said "I know I'm just waking up, but you are telling me the president is a what?"

Something just showed up in the last few days (same time frame I starting finding a lot of empty shells on my landscaping trees) and is eating large portions. Not seeing any catipillars. May be buck moth catipillars though because I've seen two different moths this week. ( cat ate one so I know the other was new)

I just see holes in the ground, about the same diameter as the bug (1/2" or so).
