Good article by George Will on what LBJ's Great Society has wrought in America.

quote:

Fifty years ago this Thursday, at the University of Michigan, Johnson had proposed legislating into existence a Great Society. It would end poverty and racial injustice, “but that is just the beginning.” It would “rebuild the entire urban United States” while fending off “boredom and restlessness,” slaking “the hunger for community” and enhancing “the meaning of our lives” — all by assembling “the best thought and the broadest knowledge.”

In 1964, 76 percent of Americans trusted government to do the right thing “just about always or most of the time”; today, 19 percent do. The former number is one reason Johnson did so much; the latter is one consequence of his doing so.

He remains, regarding government’s role, much the most consequential 20th-century president. Indeed, the American Enterprise Institute’s Nicholas Eberstadt, in his measured new booklet “The Great Society at Fifty: The Triumph and the Tragedy,” says LBJ, more than FDR, “profoundly recast the common understanding of the ends of governance.”

The great society is one reason why Appalachia is still populated. Rational economic actors would move the hell away from the area and into areas where they can provide a service, but this welfare system instituted by LBJ allows them to stay there, and live relatively comfortably by Appalachian standards.

And the sad truth is that in the years before the great society, poverty rates were absolutely plummeting. After the war on poverty started, the poverty rate stopped dropping.

In 1964, 4% of A/A children were born out of wedlock. That number is 73% today because Welfare discourages marriage, or even a male presence in the home. A male in the home lessens the check. It's a freaking disaster to be going on the 4th or 5th generation of this.
Make it temporary and available to families with both patents in times of need.

It's a real tossup between him and the current occupant for the Greatest Snake Oil Salesman Of All Time.

Perhaps the most shocking statistic of my lifetime. The implications are unfathomable.

It's not just blacks, either. White out of wedlock birthrate has sky rocketed, too. But the sad thing is that it is not a big deal to liberals, as they hold the village to greater importance than the family.

In fact, a few lib posters on here have come out AGAINST the family being the bedrock of society .

Men used to be providers for families. In return, they got loyalty from their wives and the knowledge that the children they were raising were their own.

Govt replaced fathers, by providing everything to mothers while expecting nothing from the women in return. Govt took power from men via taxation, devaluing their role in the family, and undermining the benefits of family for both genders.

Progressives really fricked up our culture. I wish some of them would at least own it.

If Obama was competant, then he might be able to measure up to LBJ. Actually with the politcal capitol Barry started with, he should have been able to accomplish much, much more.

This is true...and just a fraction of the overall devastation.
