Tomorrow, the James Beard Foundation will honor Hansen's Sno-Bliz as a 2014 America's Classic. What's your flavor? For me it's nectar creme.

This thread will soon turn into several people saying how they "don"t get" Hansen's or something similar.

I get it. And love it. Cream of nectar lasagna style or 1/2 n 1/2 cream of strawberry and lemonade

There are few of those people, but I "don't get" them. Hansen's is unique. I love the "snowy" ice. And the flavors are well made. It's hard for me to choose a favorite.

The lines were pretty long yesterday at the stands.

Cream of Nectar/Nector (it is spelled both ways).
Satsuma and either Limeade or Sno-Bliz

The flavors that I get is not as important as the texture of the shaved ice that is produced by the machines.

Cream of chocolate w/coconut
the pink SnoBliz flavor
And the newfangled ginger....
Although coffee plus cardamom is pretty damn fine.

I "don't get" how they can't replicate that machine. It's 2014, fer chrissakes.

Love the ice. The syrup could be improved.

Whaa? The syrups are the best part. Not too sweet, with some interesting natural flavors mixed in with the old-school classics.

Hansen still makes the machines bro, but they do not come cheap. The ice block machine prices will cause a MI in the torsos of the meek.

You sure about that bro ? They have the only machine like that. It's one of the things that set them apart from the other stands. The other being the cane sugar syrup.

they say the secret is to change or sharpen the blades often, and make sure the ice is very very cold(hard)

They've always (last few years Ive noticed) had that second machine, but Ive never seen it used. Maybe that is the machine they take to parties and such.

Ive always figured they only use one machine to keep the lines long and help build the mystique.

The second machine was recently restored and they were both working a few weeks ago when I went.

As I understand it, the machine is actually patented.
