Got too excited and hit enter.

Just moved into my new house. Lawn is a cluster frick. Weeds everywhere and where there isn't weeds there are patches of dirt.

Where do I even start? Do I try to destroy all the weeds? Or should I plant some grass first and try to do both at once? I'm a complete rookie when it comes to grass growing/weed killing.

If it makes you feel better your yard looks better than mine! And the grass I do have my 2 border collies have made trails that make it look like a cow pasture

Kill the grass, till, level, lay sod.

have trees pruned back, aerate lawn around the trees, get soil checked to see what needs added, add that and see what happens for a year. I don't think I would invest in the sod or other chores until I figured out what soil situation you are in with those older trees around, and what type of sun you will get after getting them cut back.

And get ready for a hefty water bill to keep it alive. You might want to think about doing this next spring (early).

I had the same exact situation, and did this late Feb/early March. My St. Aug grass is really looking good now, but I wish we'd get some damn rain.... You should either do this now (like this weekend) and expect to water it a lot, or just wait until fall.

Edit: It's hard work, but it's not awful. I like yard work, though. Most people hate it, and cringed when I told them I was tilling up my entire back yard and laying 3,000 sf of sod. Very rewarding now that it's greening up nicely.

I don't mind the work just need to know where to start. Tested the soil and ph was exactly 7. If I go the kill and start over method, how would you do it?

Get rid of those water oaks or you'll be growing dirt forever.

Trees and the shade they make play a big part in a small yard

1. Get rid of leaves
2. Prune trees for sunlight
3. Lime (or soil test)

If that is st. augustine I would rake the leaves and then throw down some fertilzer and see what happens.

And like tigerfoot said, aerate and prune trees.

That looks like hard pan. Aerating will help but you really need to till that.

Thanks. He loves sticks. And is the best retrieving border collie in the world I think. I dunno why.

I think I'm gonna start with tilling, prune trees, lime and some seed. See what happens and if it's bad news then try sod in the spring.
