If my yard was as dry as yours I'd be tickled. I'll trade you my lush, beautiful St. Aug jungle, which happens to be soggy from November to May, for that hard ground.

Try him on a frisbee.

Personally, I like your avi better than the dog though.

If it is St Aug I would try to get it to come back 50/50 shot. test the ground for PH first and kill the damn weeds and hit it hard with Miracle grow weekly and fertilizers if PH is ok. If PH is fricked up till it

Maybe look into a shade loving grass breed, since it looks like your yard only get few hours of sunlight on it. Hence, the dirt spots.

I agree with other posts. Either do the steps required this weekend or wait until fall or next spring.

We have a similar yard and I replaced the Bermuda which was doing terrible with St. Augustine which does better. But it's always a bit of a challenge to keep it looking decent. And we don't have a dog or large trees in the yard. But the first step is a shade tolerant grass, no doubt. And as stated earlier if the existing grass (what there is of it) is St. Augustine then I'd probably try to nurse that back to health first since it can run and fill in areas fairly quickly when healthy and it is a good choice for shade. Maybe do some plugging to speed things up. In that case I'd probably hit it with Atrazine to knock out most of the weeds (did this yesterday to mine) and then fertilize and keep watered in dry spells. And fungicide every few months.

PT, one more question about that dog (sorry to sidetrack):
Where did y'all get him?

have trees pruned back, aerate lawn around the trees, get soil checked to see what needs added, add that and see what happens for a year. I don't think I would invest in the sod or other chores until I figured out what soil situation you are in with those older trees around, and what type of sun you will get after getting them cut back.

If you

Spring for the irrigation system as well.

Pretty much your best option in my opinion. If you don't have irrigation, make beds in areas which are in constant sun because keeping grass alive will be difficult.

You just have a dry yard. Rent a trencher for the weekend and install some irrigation and you're good to go.

Agree with the kill weeds and till. If you only get a few hours of sunlight back there, check out the texas hybrid bluegrass. It grows in shade and is supposed to be more drought tolerant. My backyard only gets a few hours of sun. I tilled my shite, brought in topsoil, put in a french drain, and tried some zoysia that was supposedly more shade tolerant and that shite never rooted. Its been a huge pain in the arse. Ive been seeding the hell out of it with hybrid bluegrass/fescue mix, and right now its growing great. If my dog will just take it easy and let it get it established that would be great.
