I do consulting work and one of my biggest clients (about 10% of overall income) is starting to make me hate my job. He is one of the most ignorant and degrading people I have ever spoken to. He is convinced that he does not make mistakes and every time an error occurs, it is some computer's fault. Honestly, it is a miracle that he has even survived the hospitality business.

I am so close to telling him to frick off, but it is a lot of money to throw away and he is a client through a firm that I have gotten other clients through. If I messed up with him, I could lose more than just his business. Anyone else ever had to tell a client to frick off?

Yep.

Get some referrals from him first. Then tell him to frick off

Just wait until he stops paying his bills. You'll really learn to dislike him

I feel for you. I've had to fire clients before, but never did they represent 10 percent of my income.

Try to branch out and get more clients, so the perentage of income tied to him goes down, then raise your rates. Either he will fire himself, or at least you will get more money out of the annoyances.

I follow the money board closely and see you post alot regarding financial advice. If I remember correct you are a CFP or CFA? Can you email me below I would like to ask you a few questions. I am highly considering a switch in careers from. I have 13 years in the healthcare industry, more specifically contract negotiations and contract analyst. I have always thought about moving more to the personal side of finance.

Nope not yet, but I am working to become one eventually. I am in the Financial services industry though.

Yea, i'll send you an email from my personal email. I try and keep the company I work for off of here, as to not seem biased or as a salesman.

I had a similar problem once.

One day when we were both in a good mood and the client was being his usual picky self I said, "It sure is a good thing I like you so much because you can be a pain in the neck sometimes."

He looked at me for about 5 seconds and I knew either I'd just lost his business or I sealed it forever.

He started laughing and I never had a problem with him again.

I've fired several clients. Some of the best decisions I've made for my business and for my sanity.

If the client's unreasonable demands are costing you other business on a regular basis then a firing is in order.

Otherwise, I usually just grin and bear it, set expectations clearly, etc.. There are always going to be difficult clients. But they are difficult for everyone.

It is necessary to fire a customer every now and then.

A lot of good advice in this thread.

Although he cannot affect my business or other clients, he has definitely tested my sanity.

Looks like I will be taking a sales trip for replacement clients

In my profession (legal), I don't think this can be said enough. Even then, some clients hear what they want to hear.

:raiseshand:

And yes, I used that language when I did it. This person was known in local circles as being an abusive person to deal with and I found out the reputation was deserved. I think of that conversation whenever I want to cheer up.

Every single mf'ing day!!!! Of course I have about 4500 clients and a waiting list a mile long. But you honestly cannot make some people happy. I go balls out for every single one, but it seems the ones I do the most for are often the least grateful. I used to be more hesitant too, but with age comes wisdom and I have no problems telling someone to jump up my arse and eat shite.

I don't have that many sides with them. I understand how they think (or at least I think I do). Attorneys are my nemesis. They just think they know everything about everything.

Lawyers are the worst. I refuse to take lawyers or politicians as patients. No exceptions. I don't even like my own fricking lawyer. Mf'er is always trying to get free care while billing me for every single thing he can. At least until I got pictures of him with his 18 yo Costa Rican girlfriend.

Sometimes you have to tell them to walk. It will help keep you sane.
