More and more often now I'm hearing stories about someone calling claiming to be from (Microsoft/Norton/insert software/antivirus company) saying they're seeing something wrong with their computer and would like to fix it remotely.

The user, without pause, does whatever they say to get them remotely connected to the computer.

Of course, when they're done, the computer is locked with a password (not the Windows password).

If you believed that story and helped someone connect to your computer, you deserve whatever is coming to you.

Common sense is a superpower these days.

I laugh daily at how badly people subject themselves to the powers of civil discovery. People will be involved in litigation worth half a million dollars, then take to Facebook to say "HAHAHAHA I FOOL DAT BOI! DEY THINK I HURT, JUS CHILLIN DOE1 TURNT UP!!!"

Step Dad got the call last week.

I could see a LOT of old timers falling for this nonsense.

If it didn't work, the con artists wouldn't do it.

I get those calls to my house phone occasionally. What baffles me is how anyone can understand these fricking nigerian/indian/whatever accents well enough to give them the information they need -- especially old people, who have even less patience for foreigners and tech support.

Just when you think you've made something idiot-proof, the world will create a better idiot.

My wife's grandmother gets these calls occasionally, and her responses are always awesome and sometimes subtly (or not) racist. It's great entertainment from our end.

Or UPS. Can't tell you how many clients have called and told me they got that email and clicked on the .zip file and launched it. When I ask, "had you shipped something via UPS?" No, not for a while. Ugh.
