Scottrade?

eTrade?

Ameritrade?

Other?

Which is the best & why?

Which one has the best user interface? I like to see things graphically, FYI.

TIA.

Depends what kind of investing or trading you do. If you're a trader, you really need to be looking at a direct routing platform. TD Amer comes the closest of those you mentioned. Their charting is very, very good btw.

Best of both worlds would be IB for trading, and TD for charting. Trade King is you have a smaller initial deposit.

Ameritrade has done some impressive things with their graphics you can create. I don't have experience with any of the others so I cannot truly compare, but I find Ameritrade easy to use and graphically sophisticated.

This site seems to like OptionsXPress & Options House. Any experience with those 2?

I use this, but I'm not hardcore about it. It has a lot of functionality, and a reasonable fee.

I don't want to be hardcore. Just want to have some money that I can afford to lose play with to keep me interested & learn more about investing. I don't intend to get into anything too complicated.

I prefer a functional, but simple, platform/interface.

You want TD or E-Trade based on you comments above. IB, OE and some others have low fees and direct access, but the low fees are based on a certain level of activity. I have an e-trade account also. They dropped my commission to 7.99. It is really good for a lot of things I do. When I trade pennies, or trade volume and need quick execution and direct routing access, I wouldn't use anything but a direct access platform, and I don't. Same with options.

Also, if you're going to have a margin account, some other factors would be if they figure your margin based on portfolio, or individually. Interest rate? If there is either a house call, or Fed call, how many days do they give you, etc.

If you get serious, you can graduate out of e-trade or TD Ameritrade. Brokers will pay your fees incurred for transferring your account.

I like Scottrade since there is an office within 5 miles of my home.

The manager has been very helpful.

$7 trades.

I like Sharebuilder.

You can purchase fractional shares, and costs 6.95 a trade.

But the real advantage is when you use their automatic investment plan, where trades cost just 3.95 per.

Tradeking is $5 per trade. I use free resources for my analysis, but TK has a bunch of tools (graphing or otherwise) available for such purposes

Since it's not getting much support, I'll second this. I've used it for years. $4 auto trades (Tuesday only) and $7 trades. Also works great with Capital One if you use them.

I use Capital One and Sharebuilder and I am very pleased with both. For Sharebuilder I do their Advantage Automatic Investing plan. Costs $12 a month and you get 12 free trades with it. So a mere $1 for automatic investments..tough to beat.

I think they are phasing out the Advantage program, which is why I didn't add it.

I use Scottrade right now and find everything to be fairly straight forward.

I just found out about this:
RobinHood

It states that there will be $0 commission trades and no minimum deposit. Its a new stock brokerage so there is a wait list for it. I am on the wait list (#256,049) right now for Robin hood so I can't really speak to its UI. But it could be of interest to you

You can just click on the link above to get on the wait list or click on the referral link below (Full disclosure: this will improve my position in line):
