I truly love a good stout on nitro and it's interesting to me that so few bars that I've been to in the NOLA area do much with it. NOLA doesn't seem to be a great beer town but there are a handful of relatively decent bars and with the exception of Guinness, almost all stout pours are CO2.
I tried the Irish Channel Stout recently at NOLA brewery's tasting room and asked one of the bartenders about it and he said that there's some additional cost to install the nitro system and he didn't think they were going to do it. Seems like good beer bars in most other cities (outside of Louisiana) have ponied up though.
Perhaps some of that will slowly change when/if Left Hand is distributed around here.
Barley Oak in Mandeville usually has something on Nitro but I don't recall ever seeing anything at A pub or Bulldog.

Ding ding ding ding ding ding ding. NOLA is a town that knows how to host a party. Millions of visitors pack the city each year to let loose and party. Beer geeks make up a very small part of the visitors. NOLA is a cocktail city first and has numerous drinks to appease any type of person. Lundi Gras I was walking around the FQ and noticed this BeerFest place on Bourbon. Place was fricken dead. I don't see how they will make it. Every other establishment on the street was packed with people and only two individuals were in the beer bar. Walk down the street a little further and stopped into a cocktail bar, 21st Amendment. Place is packed and pumping out $10 craft cocktails hand over fist. We are lucky enough to have A Pub. It's will take some time with the craft beer craze to work itself into the the make up of what makes NOLA NOLA.

Yes! Old Raspy has been on Nitro at Chimes and Chimes east for the last few months and I've gotten a pour of it just about every time I've been there.

Good point.
I never thought about this, but if I was coming to NOLA for a weekend, I don't think I'd order a beer unless it was something special.
I'd be ordering the great cocktails and even the "tourist" cocktails.
Finally something NOLA I can comment on.

I agree with this. It's definitely in the city's DNA and many of the tourists are looking to get bombed on hand grenades and other hard libations, but I believe there's enough locals to support better beer bars.

He's essentially saying that folks around here are slower to get into craft beer, no?
I might agree with that but there are a ton of folks from all over the country in NOLA. Not everyone grew up in the area and the craft beer market has obviously exploded nation-wide. If places like Birmingham Alabama can have great beer bars, why can't we?
I believe there's a market.

I'm well aware of this. The city is seeing a big influx of people from all over and things are changing. The local brewery here brought in out of state people to run there operations. But craft beer sales are just a small fraction of what is being consumed in the area. Sure craft beer is exploded nation wide but we operate at a slower pace in this town.

I'm not a huge avenue pub cheerleader, but the only downside I can find to AP is that they allow smoking downstairs and that's a deal breaker for me in most cases.
I'm not paying $9 for a DIPA only to have some dude next to me smoking.
Avenue can't control which beers are distributed to Louisiana. Polly does a great job with the beer that is available in Louisiana and last time I checked Avenue was one of only a handful of bars to be selected to host Cantillon Zwanzee Day which says a lot about their reputation..

I don't love the A pub b/c; it can be a bit loud and smokey but we end up there a good bit as they have a solid selection and my wife likes the food. I'm certainly not bashing them; we just need more.

I usually go during the day and it's not bad at all. Usually can get a spot at the bar if I go before 4 or 5pm.
