I'd just echo what others have said. It's just no t that kinda place, at least not yet. New Orleans has always been slow to adopt to trends. This is probably more of the same. In time it will happen.

Must be a NOLA problem. Baby boomers I know love craft beer.

Things have been different here for years. We march to the beat of our own music, drink our own cocktails, and eat or own food.

That goes without saying! All of Louisiana south of I-10 is a different world.

I've never been to Avenue pub. How nice is it? A lot of the places in Portland are actually dumps. 30 taps and a bunch of tables and chairs and that's about it. Many don't even serve food. We do have lots of choices, though. Almost all of the restaurants have local craft beer on tap and bottles.

I ask because A Pub sounds pretty nice, but how would NOLA accept a craft beer taproom that was pretty basic - no restaurant, but with a killer tap and bottle lineup?

The startup costs on a place like that wouldn't be too terribly high. It might take a little time to get on the "A" list for kegs, but it would be a relatively simple business to start and maintain.

It's got that old dirty new orleans feel and they allow smoking on the bottom floor. About an inch of dust on the rafters. Not the most clean and pleasant place but it doesn't stop me from spending time there.

Ave pub is a charming dump. Kim jong loves the upstairs.

I disagree with the whole, if you build it, they will come philosophy. I dont know how well another ave pub/flying saucer type place would do.

I think an outstanding brew pub would do really well in nola, br too.

I've bitched about A Pub on here before but mainly b/c of rude service. The place is a true gem. It's got it all. A place for smokers, a place for non smokers, food, outside seating, balcony on St. Charles Ave, video poker, beers no one else gets in the state, plus it's on the Mardi Gras parade route. Downstairs is a dive, upstairs not so much. Love it hate it there is no other place like it. Oh it's open 24-7 too. Place gets plenty of praise from outside the area. I've meet people there who caravaned all the way from the NE coast just for an event at the pub.

I agree. Old Raspy and Obsidian Stout are great on nitro. It kills me when a bar has a fantastic stout that would be perfect on the nitro tap and they choose to put some beer that nobody wants to drink on the nitro just to see if it improves the beer...

I'm not a huge avenue pub cheerleader, but the only downside I can find to AP is that they allow smoking downstairs and that's a deal breaker for me in most cases.

I'm not paying $9 for a DIPA only to have some dude next to me smoking.

Avenue can't control which beers are distributed to Louisiana. Polly does a great job with the beer that is available in Louisiana and last time I checked Avenue was one of only a handful of bars to be selected to host Cantillon Zwanzee Day which says a lot about their reputation..

I couldn't have said it any better. I despise smoke, so it pretty much has to be a special event for me to head over there.

The smoke doesnt bother me that much, they do have a patio outside, upstairs thats smoke free and a balcony. Its not like you're trapped with smoke like other bars.

They put tables out front too. I'm not a smoker so id rather it be smoke free, but it's not nearly as other places.

Unless you're there at the arbitrary times they force you to be with the smokers because they don't want to open the upstairs bar.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: if you want to be a world class craft beer bar, you shouldn't allow smoking at all. Period.

frick the Bulldog in BR. One person smoking in that place can ruin the whole building. Went a while back for one of their half off things they sent me and it was horrible.

Yeah, I find the smoke at Bulldog BR and Uptown worse than Avenue. I'm not a fan of smoke, but Avenue doesn't really bother me. The times it is crowded are the same times upstairs is open.

the smoke has never detracted from my visits there.

I don't see how that makes or breaks a beer bar being titled as great or world class.

IMO, bars should allow smoking. I don't smoke (regularly) but the two just seem to go together well.
