How would you guys feel about using the non-exclusive tag on Graham?

Other teams would be able to negotiate with him, and we'd have 7 days to match any offer. If we don't, we'd receive two first round picks (if what I heard is correct).

Graham's camp could choose to negotiate or field offers, and at least at least it would set some sort of market. The risky part (other than losing him) is if the arbitrator ultimately rules that Jimmy should remained tagged as a TE.

I'm getting to the point where I'm open to parting ways. I love Jimmy, and our offense is better with him, but it will be a huge challenge to manage two huge contracts on offense, especially when some of our guys on defense will be coming up on new contracts.

At least this way we'd get something in return and save ourselves some much needed cap space.

I'd hate to lose the top player at any position, but we just can't pay the guy top WR money. He's not Calvin Johnson.

If what I heard you say that you thought what you heard was correct then I think I would be fine with that.

What range would those first round picks be?

Depends on what team offers Graham a contract. There's a couple of teams with two first round picks. I think the Rams have a 2nd and one in the teens. We might get a first this year and one next year from another team.

Not sure if nola.com is a good source but here's a quote

quote:

Non-exclusive tagged players may still negotiate with other teams and sign an offer sheet, but their current team has seven days to match. If they choose not to do so, the new team must give the former team two first-round draft picks.

and

SBNation

quote:

The non-exclusive tag allows the player to work the market a bit and receive offers from other teams. If he signs an offer sheet, the team that placed the tag on him has the opportunity to match the new contract and retain him. If he leaves, they receive compensation, usually in the form of two first-round draft picks.

As for how I feel about the idea.. It's sort of a torn feeling for me. I LOVE Jimmy, and the idea of him going somewhere else and tearing it up is terrifying to me. People would talk about how bad we messed up for a long time if that happened.

On the other hand, the idea of saving all that cap space is thrilling. We could actually sign some decent FAs this offseason, and with the extra first (I'm assuming we would get 1 this season and 1 next season) rd pick we could grab a #1 WR to help fill the void Jimmy would leave. Hopefully we would end up with the breathing room to retain some of our young defensive talent in the next 2-3 seasons, too.

Overall, if I had to make a choice, I would take the two firsts for him. It's a lot more about the cap space than it is the picks though. I know people here argue that Jimmy for unproven picks is not worth it because they could bust.. That is true, but the saved cap space is the real reward. We have the opportunity to snag two starters (who are cheap for 3-4 seasons) AND have the extra cap space to sign more. It's a no brainer. In the end, 2-3 above average players > 1 slightly great player IMO

Right, so I did hear correctly.

This would force things along, unless Graham's agent wants to sit and wait for the arbitrators ruling. If they rule against them, there still may be teams that are willing to pay him more than a TE. If the arbitrator rules for them, even better.

The non-exclusive tag seems to one that's ripe for ugliness.

He's a great player but 2 top-32 players > Jimmy right now.

If we were to get a top 10 pick in this draft as well as a 1st rounder next year, or one later in the 1st this year, I would definitely be down for this. I think it would benefit us actually. Especially with the talent and depth in this draft. Jimmy is amazing, but he can be replaced in some fashion. There's only 1 person on our team that cannot be.

You could also turn one of those first round picks into multiple picks, as well as signing a couple of starters in FA.

Might want to call up Tony Gonzalez, too.

2 1sts is really farfetched, but a 1st and a 2nd or 3rd is more feasible.

Say we trade for this year's top 15 pick. You could arguably get: Watkins, Barr, Mack, Evans, Gilbert, Clinton-Dix, or Ebron.

And then the #27th pick you could either trade back and load up on more picks or pick up someone like Pyror or Amaro.

Trading Jimmy, but picking up a top S/DB and a WR/TE. shores up two holes and saves us the 10m+ cap for 5-6 years

Yup.
Keep 1 1st round pick and trade the second one.
2-3 second round pics would send everyone into fap madness!

Last year, Dallas traded the #18 pick for the #31 pick and the 74th (3rd round) pick.

If only there were some guarantee it would be a crappy team with a high 1st round pick (and presumably high first round pick next year) that would make the offer. If it was someone like Seattle on the other hand we wouldn't be getting near as much value.

Here is a question...say the Rams signed him and we got an early pick this year and they sucked again next year and we were going to get another early pick...could the Rams make a deal with another team to trade that early pick to a later one, thus intentionally or unintentionally hurting us?

I'm fapping right now just thinking about it!

Maybe we can still free up enough money and grab Talib
