Just didn't want an AR. Don't want to bother cleaning and maintaining a gun. Got it for shooting beavers and when SHTF. How bad a decision was it??

I'd Rather an AR-15...
but if you have a ClassIII and got the select fire version, then I'd say you made a fun choice...

The stainless version is a beauty

They're nice guns and I have owned one in the past. It's one that I don't miss having though. I prefer the AR. And you don't know what you're talking about when you say you have to clean and maintain the AR. You will in all likelihood never abuse a gun enough that would cause it to FTF. If you do the mini would do the same since they are both gas operated.

I like the looks and the design of the Mini-14, but the knock on them is accuracy.
It isn't all that accurate to start with, a few rapid shots and it goes all to hell.

Fine looking weapon. years ago I passed one that was pretty well tricked out, folding adjustable stock and all, and....well...wish. I had it now.

You made an excellent choice. Mini-14 or AR, you can't go wrong with either.

I've just heard they are not that accurate. AR is way more better

Mine has always been accurate enough
Probably more accurate than I can shoot anyways

Except that the Mini 14 is gas piston versus direct gas impingement. It runs a lot cleaner.
But both are fantastic rifles and I'm sure you'll be happy either way. Whatever you shoot won't be able to tell the difference anyway.

I have a Mini-14, love it. Its a tack-driver. When you pull the trigger, it goes bang.
I also have a Spikes Tactical and the good old Colt semi-automatic.
All are very fine weapons.
The thing I like about the Mini is that its not one of those eee'ville looking 'AR' semi-automatics.
In the event of a SHTF scenario, it is less likely to catch the eyes of any LEOs.
You did well with the purchase of your Mini-14.
Enjoy.

Not a bad decision at all. I'd love to have a mini-30

I have a model 580 stainless Mini 14 and I love it. The late model's barrels were redesigned and are a lot more accurate than the earlier versions. I like the open sights.

Heck, if that's true I might have to get one. I love my M1A and have always wanted something like it in .223.

10 years ago it would have been a bad decision. Same would be the case if you bought a used one made before 2004-2006. The Mini-14's of that era have a well-deserved reputation for lousy accuracy.
But in the 2005-2006 time frame, Ruger re-tooled their production facilities to improve the accuracy of the Mini-14. The ones built prior to the re-tooling, and those built after, have little in common when it comes to accuracy.

The only thing I am going to change on mine is to install an adjustable gas port from Accuracy Systems so I can control the ejection and barrel jump.
