Saw Lone Survivor last night *Spoilers*

It was an all around good movie, though some parts may dissapoint for those who read the book
-The training montage during the opening credits was a nice touch
-I really wish they could have fleshed out the characters a little more. I couldn't tell who was who (except for Mark Walberg as Lutrell) until half way through the movie. Same problem I had with Black Hawk Down; all the characters looked the same
-The battle on the mountain was great. Almost exactly how I pictured it when I read the book. It was intense when they fell down the mountain, both times
-Axe's death was shocking. I knew he would die, but the bullet to the head was hard to see
-They did a great job of showing how hard as nails these SEALs were. Full of bullet holes, broken limbs, and they continue to fight. Hell, Axe took a round to the face that came out the back of his head, and he still fought and was even light hearted at times about it.
-I knew they wouldn't be able to resist turning this into a typical action movie. The ending battle in the village was a little silly and strayed significantly from the book. In the book, he was protected by the village and the Taliban would not go to the village because they feared the tribal leader (at least that's what I remember from the book, I read it years ago). In the movie it was a full on Taliban assault with stuff blowing up and people getting shot. Even the little kid helped out by throwing Lutrell a knife instead of a duck. Typical action movie stuff.
Overall, I really enjoyed the movie. Showing the pictures of the actual people who died in Operation Red Wing was very moving. The whole theater broke out in applause at the end. Definitely worth seeing, though if you have a weak stomach you may want to avert your eyes during some of the scenes.

Glad I wasn't the only one with that issue.
If it where me, I would have tied those civilians up. Because they allowed those three to live, 13 highly trained Americans died.

I have no problem not knowing more about the SEAL's. They show me all I need to know about them in the beginning with the guy and his wife wanting a horse, the pictures on their walls, etc.
It's the same problem people said they had with Zero Dark Thirty, and I really just don't understand why you need to know more about them. Did you know all there is to know about the characters in Saving Private Ryan?

I had the same problem with the first few episodes of The Pacific. Its like they put out a casting call for generic Italian American twenty-somethings.

Agreed. Though I'm not in the military, so I don't have the backgroung to make a good judgment call on that.

It didn't bother me. Berg did a good job

Great movie. Great Americans. Great Acting. Great story. Much respect to those who lost their lives in this mission to secure our safety and freedom. ...

It was 19. The other 3 with Luttrell, 8 SEALs in the QRF, and 8 Army - the MH-47 crew from the 160th SOAR.
I just finished re-reading the book yesterday. Luttrell's explanation for not tying up the goatherders was that they had nothing to tie them up with. I found that to be kind of odd. 50' of parachute cord only weighs a couple of ounces and doesn't take up much space. I'd figure four guys getting dropped into the middle of Indian country would be ready for almost any contingency.

I agree with your points and also have a question.
In the beginning they are rescuing Marcus and then it flashes back to 3 days earlier. Meaning Marcus was missing for about 2 days.
In the book wasn't he missing much longer than that? It's been a while since I read to book but I just seemed he was missing for much longer.

Not sure, but I also remember it being a week or weeks. He was there long enough for the local children to teach him some Muslim prayers. He was also given some sort of leaf to chew on as a pain reliever (I'm sure it was poppy). So there was some time where he was in the village, and was taken care of by the local villagers.

An operation was sent in to extract him, and on July 2 – four days after his drop-off – Marcus Luttrell was able to get the medical attention he very badly needed

Hmm. You're probably right. In the book, it seemed like much longer.

I was telling a buddy of mine the other day that I admire and look up to the SEAL's that the story is about. At the same time, I can't discount the badassery of Muhammad Gulab and the rest of the village that helped shelter Luttrell.
Now, I didn't read the book, so I don't know how much of what was shown in the movie was truthful or exaggerated, but I am assuming that that guy did in fact help shelter Luttrell from the Taliban, correct?

I thought it grazed the back of his head?

Maybe it did. I thought, in the book, someone was shot in the face, but continued to fight.

Axelson was shot in the head in real life but in the movie it was a graze.
Also Luttrell was rescued after 6 days.

Oh crap...one of my buddies died when the Huey was shot down. My wife will lose it if she sees his picture on screen

Axe had the really bad head wound, Luttrell said it was the worst one he had ever seen in person or in textbooks during his medical training.

For how long did Gulab hide the real Marcus Luttrell?
Though the time elapsed seems rather brief in the movie, the Lone Survivor true story reveals that the real Gulab hid Marcus Luttrell for four days, moving him from house to house in his Pashtun village and even into a cave to avoid the pursuing Taliban. "The Taliban came and sat down with me," says the real Mohammad Gulab. "I said, 'No, I will not hand him over to you.' ... They told me, 'You will die. Your brother will die. Your cousins will die. Your whole family will die. It's not worth it. Give us the American,' and I said 'No, I will protect him 'til the end.'" Like in the movie, Luttrell was eventually rescued by U.S. forces who had been scouring the mountains for as long as he had been in hiding. -60 Minutes
