Want to get a credit card for the perks. Cash back or rewards?

I feel like im missing out on some perks for just spending the money im already spending. I would plan on paying it off every month and would be using it for business and personal. Im looking for some thoughts. We like to travel but dont fly very often.

I like cash rewards personally but I know sometimes the travel perks pay off well
Depends on what categories you spend the most in

biggest expenses are gas and groceries. the business will have me driving a lot. I also just got into reading about bluebird and the reload cards. good lord.

AMEX Blue Cash Preferred
6% on groceries
3% on gas
Certainly worth the $75 annual fee and they waived my first year and gave me $150 for signing up. I don't have a family to buy groceries for, nor spend hardly any on gas, and pulled $600 in rewards this year.
ETA: Post your email and I can refer you and get you the $150 and myself $50.

That was gonna be my suggestion
It's my best all around card but I put all my gas on my penfed card now since it gets 5% and is accepted at racetrac (Amex isn't)

With those categories I'd go with Blue Cash Preferred Amex. That would give you 6% back on groceries and 3% back on gas.

The blue cash that isn't preferred/no annual fee just has 3% on gas and groceries right not the 6%?

If you want points, the LSU Capital One card gives you double points on gas and groceries (walmart included). A lot of the grocery points cards only give double points for a local grocery store. You can also use it at Sam's

this. i personally prefer the ease of cash back, but my understanding is if you know how to work the points system(transferring to frequent flyer clubs etc) you get better bang for your buck with travel redemption.

That is true. For example, you can get two first tickets to Bangkok from MSY. To generate those points, it could cost you as little as $1800 in expenditures to create enough points to book the tickets. That isn't a terrible cost for booking two economy tickets to Bangkok straight up. However, I'd be booking first class tickets in this scenario, which sell for $24,000.

Just reading up on the blue preferred at the amex website and it looks like walmart (groceries) and murphy (gas) aren't covered since they are superstores.
Bummer.
Bummer.

Walmart and target will rarely be considered grocery category

Well crap it. I'll have to look more into the travel.

Get a Chase Sapphire Preferred Card. Their points system is awesome. Also check out The Points Guy and his blog. Good info on credit card points for beginners.

I'll have to go read up later on bogleheads and penfed, but I'm pretty sure that the penfed rewards visa works at Walmart and is 3% fuel and 2% groceries.
