Is there any way to buy stocks/ETFs without going through a broker?

I've got MF's through retirement accounts, and I know there are some companies that will sell their stocks directly to consumers, but is there any way, preferably online, where I can buy and sell stocks directly without incurring fees and whatnot?
TIA
TIA

There are hundreds of companies that are willing to let you trade stocks without being compensated for it.

I've been using Charles Schwab's OptionsXpress. Lots of really nice tools and the fee's are not too terribly bad.

Vanguard charges no fees for their ETFs
(can buy any stocks with them as well, fees vary depending on the amount of Vanguard assets you have with them. )

Schwab charges $8.95 a trade regardless of size, are always accessible and able to answer any question (they patched me through to an estate expert the other day at no cost), have a highly functionable website, and make it very easy to transfer funds to/from your bank account. Hard to beat.

Schwab actually has a large selection of ETFs they don't charge transaction fees on, not just their own.

I'm as happy with Schwab as I am with my local bank and my local bank is pretty good too.

I did not know that. Another plus. I only buy stocks and options and do a little shorting, and they have been very easy to use for all 3 types of trades.

I've been dabbling in options. Just covered calls at this point. Done ok.

Wouldn't you have to become a member of a stock exchange to do that?
My guess is the commissions you pay a broker will be less.
InteractiveBrokers is a good discount broker. I think its $1 a trade.

I use Optionsxpress as well. I expect to open a Vanguard account for their mutual funds - I have thus far used Optionsxpress only for options and individual stocks - but so far, I give them high marks.

These liberals actually think they know what is best for you and me. Here spidey thinks one has to actually become a member of a stock exchange to buy stock directly from the issuer.
There should be some kind of test to vote on tax and revenue issues.

E*Trade has some commission-free ETFs, but they charge a penalty for selling in less than 30 days.

Tuba, you crazy liberal, I like you now. I had never heard of them. You literally just saved me hundreds of dollars.
