I'm in Houston, never been here before. What are some good places to eat thatdo not cost an arm and a leg? (On budget) Also any special places from Houston to Lafayette to Baton Rouge and New Orleans to eat? TIA. Also, most of my travels have been restricted to the east coast and up some northern states and I had never made it into Louisiana, rode through northern Louisiana on the way and it looked like a hunters paradise. I'm sure it's like that throughout the state

What is your budget? What does an arm and a leg mean to you?

Well last night we were around MD Anderson, tonight I'm staying in Sugarland... I'm not sure where that is in relation to it. Well there are two others on the trip too, so in this case probably don't need to spend more than 25 for a meal per person.

If in Sugarland, you can go to the town center area. There is a flying saucer (beer) and a Guru Burgers across the street from it, also has good beer selection. There is also Escalantes a pretty good mexican place there as well.

For Tex Mex, Lupe Tortilla and El Tiempo Cantina are musts.

Damn, now I want some fajitas. Can't beat Lupe's fajitas in my opinion.

If you are downtown during the day check out the Flying Saucer there instead of the one in SL. When you get back to SL, check out Barrel and Brew for dinner.

Look at offshoreangler's response in that link. He makes some good recommendations.

You pretty much can't go wrong with an offshore suggestion.

Breakfast-Hot Bagel, La Mexicana, Goode Company Taqueria, Breakfast Klub, Buffalo Grille, Empire Cafe, Barnaby's, Blacksmith, La Guadalpana

Lunch-Local Foods, Relish, Goode Company Seafood, Pondicheri, Kenny and Ziggy's, Niko Niko, Les Givral, Barnaby's, Dry Creek, Gatlin's, Bombay Pizza, Revival Market, St. Arnold's Brewery, Phoenicia original and the one downtown, Cali Sandwiches, Central Market, Istanbul Grill, Fat Bao, Lankfords, Specs deli on Smith

Dinner-Hugo's, The Pass/Provisions, El Tiempo, Reef, Kata Robata, Mala Sichuan, Vinoteca Poscol, Mockingbird Bistro, Roost, Giacomo's Cibo e Vino, Brooklyn Athletic Club, Shepherd Park Draught House, Underbelly, Paulies, Liberty Kitchen, Banana Leaf, Oporto, Queen Vic,

Brunch-Hugo's or Backstreet Cafe

Drinks-Hay Merchant, Anvil, Mongoose vs Cobra, Cottonwood

Most Pappas seafood places are doing 7.95/doz oysters right now...could be something to consider.

Some of those places might be out of your price range for dinner...like Hugo's, Pass/Provisions, Underbelly, but there are quite a few places that are normally high priced that do a decent happy hour for food. If you're interested I'll put together a list of those too.

Offshore's Phoenicia rec is a good one for downtown. Phoenicia is a local small chain of upscale, middle-eastern/international grocery stores. The downtown location has its own garage parking. "Hot lunch" style buffet line with chicken shwarma, typical mediterranean sides...lots of tasty food for a modest price. Store has a small adjacent seating area for dining in, as well as a bar. Not a bad happy hour snack stop or lunch on a budget. Big bakery case full of sweets, too.

You know that old "Big Ben" restaurant and bar that can never stay in business? East side of Gulf Freeway, between Bay Area and Nasa?

Saw the "Coming soon" sign...it's going to be an El Tiempo

Yeah, that place has some serious turnover with concepts. I've been to just about every version they have had in there and none of them were "bad".

That's cool about El Tiempo! I will for sure be going there when it opens. I cut through there the other day (shortcut) and saw they were putting up a lot of iron out front but didn't see a sign. Thanks for the head's up.
