Good expensive bottles of wine for a gift?

I started a new career this year, and have had a mentor figure who took me under his wing, taught me a ton, and helped me keep and excel in my job in a heavily competitive and difficult industry. I really couldn't be here where I am today without him, to where I want to get him a few good bottles of great wine. I don't know shite about wine honestly, but I'm sure the good people in the F&D board do. Give me some recommendations over a few good bottles of wine to send him for the holidays, and it would be greatly appreciated.

I would opt for an expensive bottle of whiskey and/or scotch. Will last him a hell of a lot longer than a couple bottles of wine.
And he probably won't have to share with his wife.

Did you have a particular price range and number of bottles in mind? I'm sure no matter what the price people could assemble a very nice list for you.

3-4 bottles with a $100-$200 combined range is what I'm looking for.

What about a collection from a winery...like Chapallet chardonnay, signature cab, cervantes, pritchard hill.
or maybe a similar gamut of jordan wines or caymus

Far Niente cab.is my all time favorite. I have two bottles left that I purchased several years ago. At that time they were $110/bottle.

I'm not sure how the wine tastes, but Meeker has a line of wines called 'Handprint' where the winemakers dip their hands in paint and place their handprint on the bottles that they worked on that year (each person has a different color). One of the handprints is purple and gold, and the paint makes for a cool looking bottle.
I got one a couple of years ago, but I haven't opened it yet.

I am in the same boat as you, and here is a trifecta that was recommended for me. It was VERY well received. Names and pics below.
1. Orin Swift - Saldo
2. Orin Swift - The Prisoner
3. Silver Oak - Alexander Valley Cab

Honestly go to a wine store (martins, churchills, calandros). Find the specialist in the section and speak to them. CJ on Perkins calandros, Eileen at government, mark the owner of churchills....they all know their selection better than anyone on the board. Walk in with a total price and tell them it's a gift. Spread out the love on varietals maybe too. But one bottle Pinot noir, one bottle cabernet, and one blend.

being that you do not know what he really likes, i would go with one bottle from a big name such as opus one (should run about 150/bottle)and that would make a bigger statement than 4 $50 bottles from lesser known wineries

Johnnie Walker Blue FTW (if hes a scotch drinker)
I've given this to a couple of folks who helped me out and they were very grateful. Paid off big time.

Solid advice.
ETA: Is the guy even a wine snob?
