I have consumed my coffee with tons of cream (half & half) and loads of sugar. I have been trying to cut out my sugar intake, and tried a cup of Joe last night with a french vanilla creamer with no sugar.

It was certainly drinkable, but not enjoyable. I had a cup today with just straight half & half, but ended up caving and added 1.5 tablespoons of sugar to drink it.

I know black coffee is when you can tell the flavor variances in coffee quality, but I've tried black coffee with the following:

Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee
Community Coffee Breakfast Blend
Starbuck's Dark Roast
DazBog Medium Roast

Is this just something you need to do enough to start enjoying it, or do you never truly "enjoy" the coffee? How long should I expect before I start preferring black to sweetened beverages?

Switched in 2004 - "Cold Turkey". The nuances of different Coffees are more noticeable. Don't miss the Sweetener/Dairy.

Start with a drop (and i mean a small drop) of half and half and like half a pack of sweet and low.

I drink too much coffee.

Just started doing french press in the mornings and I only drink it black(using Allegro brand medium roast from Whole Foods) .
With a drip, I usually add a splash of 1/2 n 1/2.

If you're making coffee at home, look into french press. Fresh grinds in a french press is a completely different coffee experience.

Just go cold turkey and deal with it. Like anything else, you'll get used to it.

I honestly don't think the creamer adds much unless you add a ton of it. So I generally drink it without.

No sugar is tougher for me to do. I can do it but I don't really enjoy the cup like I do with a little bit of sugar.

Same here and I had put loads of sugar in coffee til 24. No sugar, bit of milk or half since then. I can taste even the tiniest amount of sugar and will spew out of my mouth immediately(no shite).

I put half a teaspoon of sugar and a splash of milk or half-and-half (whatever I have where I am).

I just don't like it completely black, and the calories on what I add are all but negligible on 2 cups a day.

Years ago a guy at work told me if I drank it black for a week I would never go back. He was right.

How many cups do you drink a day? If you can get yourself down to one in the morning, it shouldn't be that big of a deal. I'm like you in that regard. I don't like the taste of straight black coffee.

If you drink coffee later in the day as a pick me up, try ice water and apples instead. They'll wake you up more than coffee will at that time of day.

Do you use a French Press? It makes a world of difference.

i used to be one cream and one sugar

i stopped using the cream, and didnt really feel like i noticed a big difference

i still use the sugar, but getting rid of the creamer was relatively easy

i want to go black too, just haven't done it yet

I've always had coffee as a sweet treat, not as an energy boost. Caffeine has 0 effects on me.

That being said, I have always enjoyed an overly sweet drink to just enjoy as I would a soda. I usually drink 1 or 2 cups a day, and I'll sometimes do a huge glass of cafe au lait on weekends. I use a french press at home, so I've already got that down.

I've been trying to do this for a year now, and I still haven't got there yet

I'm down to half a TS of sugar and just a dash of cream, but I still can't to straight black, at least not for the Community coffee we have at work.

I want to get a Chemex for home, and when I do, I'll start experimenting with better coffee

coffee from a french press & well made: black - this is how I drink it at work in the mornings and afternoons

coffee from a standard drip machine and/or other mediocre beans/brewing methods: splash h&f, 1 spoon sugar - I do this with coffee I make at home from my Cusinart and when I get drip coffee to go @ CC's, Mojo, Royal Blend, etc.
