Or did Anderson get his masterpiece way earlier with Rushmore or Royal Tennebaums?

I really enjoyed it, with one caveat: I thought the scene with the kids dancing in their underwear was inappropriate, and was a mistake. I get what he was trying to show. It's something familiar to anyone who grew up at a relatively early age, but I thought they've could have handled it differently.

It's on the list - I haven't seen it. I really didn't care for Rushmore or Life Aquatic, and didn't watch all of either of them. I really enjoyed Royal Tennebaums, but - as raw as it was, my favorite is still Bottle Rocket.

So for me - he's never really surpassed that first film, which was just barely more than a student film. but I do intend to watch Moonrise Kingdom.

Yeah, that scene made me a little uncomfortable too. That being said, it was really a fantastic film. Probably not his best, but really, really good.

Hard to choose my favorite Wes Anderson film, I've enjoyed them all.
For me I think it goes:

favorites - Rushmore and Moonrise Kingdom
tier 2 - Life Aquatic and Fantastic Mr. Fox
tier 3 - Bottle Rocket, Darjeeling, Royal Tenebaums

I enjoyed Moonrise Kingdom more than The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

Fantastic movie, such an improvement over Darjeeling.

I really like all of his movies, but I think masterpiece is a little strong for this. Rushmore is his masterpiece at this point.

Life Aquatic is my favorite of his, with Moonrise coming in third behind Tenenbaums.

it's a masterpiece.

As a boy scout who was a hopeless romantic and occasionally an outcast in my troop, I identified with this movie strongly. It was basically a wish fulfillment fantasy of my 12 year old self at camp.

I don't understand why a director can't have more than 1 masterpiece. I can think of several artists I would consider to have multiple masterpieces.

Moonrise is far and away my least favorite of his movies

Those kid actors are just so stiff and terrible, and it's not really very funny either. The Jason Schwartzman scenes are really the only belly laughs I get the whole movie.

To compare it to Rushmore or Royal T's is a travesty, IMO

the fact that they're so overly serious in such a crazy situation is part of the humor.

Meh, I dunno about that

Max's sidekick (Dirk I think) in Rushmore is overly serious, but is still funny

Those kids are just not very good actors

Acting is sort of an afterthought in WA films. They're more about setting, details, and dialogue that catches you off guard. The children were fine.
