My wife has finally accepted her rightful place in the kitchen. Our cheap Faber wedding gift knives are irritating for all involved. She suggested new knives as a Christmas present idea this morning... of course that won't be the ONLY thing I'll get.

Knives to last a lifetime..... recommend them please.

Don't get a set, just get what you use the most.

8" chef's knife
serrated bread knife
carver
small paring knife
rod to hone the edge

I really like my Ken Shun's.

what ruzil said

go to Marshalls and TJ Maxx, check their stock from time to time. They ocasionally have high end knives for great prices.

Go to williams sonoma and try a bunch, you need to see what feels good in your hand.

Then go online and find them cheap.

As others have said, you don't need that many knives. All you really need is:
paring knife
utility knife
chefs knife (8 or 10 inch)
bread knife

I'd recommend Wusthof hollow edge knives. They also sell LSU licensed steak knives. LINK

I've got a set of Wusthof classics but honestly use my $30 on amazon Victorinox chef's knife more than anything.

So Wusthof is high class with a good reputation?

I like that whole package you linked with the block and shears as well.

The reviews on the link are all great, but I don't trust reviews on Amazon.

What's the story with Cutco? What can yall tell me about Cutco?

I own this set (the one I linked). Great product, plus Amazon stands behind their products.

Cutco - go to eBay to purchase or invite a sales rep. to your house. Great set of knives (I only have steak) - lifetime warranty.

I've got a set of global and wouldn't trade them for anything that I've ever held.

I have so many high end knives (wusthoff and Henkel) and the one I use the most, hands down, is the white handle one from the restaurant supply store. 30$
